What Is a College Football Spread?
The live odds above include several different types of bets or sets of odds. It can be confusing. Each game typically has a spread, a moneyline and an over/under (O/U). It’s critical to understand the different terms when placing wagers.
Here’s what you need to know about the spread, moneyline and over/unders:
When betting on the spread in college football, you have to factor this number into the final score when making your bet and understanding the result.
The spread essentially evens out the odds when factoring in that one team is likely better than the other.
Let’s create an example: If Alabama is a -6 favorite over Georgia in a college football game, it would mean that Alabama is favored by 6 points. If you bet on Alabama -6, you will win the bet if Alabama wins by 7 points or more (if Alabama wins by 6, it is called a “push,” which is similar to what you might consider a tie in sports. You’ll just get your money back.). If you bet on Alabama -6 and then Alabama wins by 5 points or fewer, or loses outright to Georgia, you’ll lose the bet. If you bet Georgia +6, then you will win the bet if Georgia wins outright or loses by 5 or fewer points. If Georgia loses by 6, again, that’s a “push” and you get your money back.
What Is a College Football Moneyline?
Moneyline bets are the easiest to understand. You’re predicting the winner of the game without any point spread. The only other thing you might consider are the odds. One team typically will be favored over the other, so sportsbooks factor this into moneyline bets by adding in odds.
Let’s look at an another example: If Florida is favored by 3 points, the odds on the moneyline bet might be something like -140. This means that you’d have to bet $140 for Florida to win the game in order to win $100. Or if you’re betting on a 3-point underdog to win outright, the moneyline odds might be something like +180. Then, if you bet $100 for the underdog to win outright, you’d win $180 if they win.
What Is a College Football Over/Under?
Over/under (O/U) bets are unique in that if you’re making this bet, you don’t care who wins or loses the game. You’re making a prediction on how many total points are scored. If an over/under line on the mythical Alabama vs. Georgia game is 55.5, then you can bet on the “over” 55.5 number or “under” 55.5 points. If you take the over, you don’t care if the score is 30-27 or 54-3, you just want a combination of at least 56 points so you win the bet. Your winnings will be based on the odds attached to the over or under.
