The Crimson Tide put on a clinic in “fumbling the bag” on Saturday. Literally. Oklahoma forced 3 Alabama turnovers, including 2 fumbles and a pick 6 that set the tone in the early stages. Alabama won the time of possession, the first-down battle, totaled more offensive yards and committed fewer penalties than Oklahoma, which scored just 1 offensive touchdown all evening. Inconsistency kept the Crimson Tide out of the Playoff last year, and now Alabama is in very real danger of missing the College Football Playoff once again with the Iron Bowl looming.

With all that said, let’s give Oklahoma its well-earned flowers.

Even with John Mateer struggling, and even with Alabama winning just about every major offensive statistical category, Oklahoma’s defense and special teams unit got it done. The Sooners have now won 2 consecutive games decided by 1 possession where their defense scored a touchdown. That may not be sustainable, but it proves that this Sooners defense is playing at an elite level with 2 weeks to play in the regular season. The Sooners were the biggest winner of the Week 12 slate, and it’s not particularly close.

But where there are winners, there are losers. The biggest loser of the weekend from the SEC was not Alabama — it was Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt and Oklahoma still have the same amount of losses, but the Sooners’ résumé is far superior. What’s especially crucial: Oklahoma beat Alabama, whereas Vanderbilt did not. The SEC might put 5 teams into the Playoff, but it definitely won’t put 6, which means if Oklahoma and Alabama each finish 10-2, Vanderbilt will be the odd man out. And that’s not even mentioning the loser of the Big 12 Championship Game — especially if it’s Texas Tech.

Obviously, Oklahoma’s win and more results from around the country shook up the bowl projections quite a bit. Georgia took Alabama’s spot in the top 4, pushing the Tide down to 9th and Vanderbilt to the ReliaQuest Bowl, with the massive Texas Longhorns brand filling the Citrus Bowl. North Texas takes over the G5 Playoff spot after South Florida lost to Navy — though it’s still anyone’s race between North Texas, Navy, Tulane and James Madison out of the Sun Belt.

A few SEC teams are still in the hunt for a bowl appearance: Kentucky, Mississippi State and Auburn. As stated last week, each would have to beat at least 1 top 25 team to reach 6 wins, so for now they won’t appear in the projections.

We’ll leave this here for anyone not familiar with the current CFP format for 2025-26:

• The top 5 conference champions will be awarded auto-bids, as they were last year. However, unlike last year, the top 4 of those 5 conference champions will not be guaranteed a first-round bye. Seeds 1-4 are simply be determined by their CFP ranking at the end of the season.
• This year’s quarterfinal matchups feature the Rose, Sugar, Cotton and Orange Bowls, with the Peach Bowl and Fiesta Bowl as semifinal hosts. As with last season, first-round matchups (Seeds 5-12) will be hosted by the higher-ranked team on campus.

Not to mention, this is a game that Texas A&M is likely to be winning by a significant margin in the 2nd half, so Owens and the rest of A&M’s running backs will get more run than usual. Owens is averaging above this total across his past 5 games, too.

Thomas Castellanos, Florida State QB: More than 242.5 passing yards

Kentucky boat-raced Florida on Saturday. Mississippi State saw a strong start wither away in the 2nd half against Georgia. Auburn, poor Auburn, fumbled a golden opportunity gifted by Vanderbilt, unable to drive the field for a score after holding firm on 4th down late.

Apart from LSU, which sits at 5-3 and plays Western Kentucky in a few weeks, the Kentucky Wildcats appear to have the best chance to play in a bowl game among SEC teams that haven’t already achieved 6 wins. That said, every team that fits the criteria outlined in the above sentence will have to beat at least one top 25 team to reach 6 wins. Think it over and let us know if you still care across the next few weeks, Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi State.

Then there’s Auburn. As outlined last week, there is technically a path for the Tigers through APR rankings, or by beating Alabama in the Iron Bowl. But let’s say Auburn does go 5-7 — would the Tigers even accept a bowl bid given the coaching search and — *gestures broadly* — the current state of bowl season? At this point, I lean no.

Here’s another question for the field, in a similar tone: Does any ACC program actually want to go to the College Football Playoff?

What a disaster the ACC has been this season. After Miami and Georgia Tech’s losses to unranked opponents in Week 10, Virginia and Louisville were the latest ACC programs to turn down a golden opportunity in Week 11. All of a sudden, Pitt and SMU are right back in the thick of things with 5 ACC programs sitting at 5-1. Week 13’s matchup between Pitt and Georgia Tech could go a long way in deciding the No. 11 spot in the Playoff field.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but the other pressing questions I still have are as follows:

• Who will win the G5 bid?
• Will the Big 12 put 2 teams into the Playoff?

For the G5, I see 3 likely candidates remaining: South Florida, North Texas and, with slightly less confidence, James Madison. A few others have outside chances.

If the winner of the AAC has just 1 loss, I don’t see a way James Madison has a shot — and I especially like South Florida among the current 1-loss AAC programs. The Bulls boast good nonconference wins over Boise State and Florida and beat North Texas by nearly 4 scores earlier this season. South Florida and its mighty offense face Navy, another contender for the G5 spot, this Saturday.

Finally, there’s the Big 12, which also ties into our old friend Vanderbilt. With Virginia and Louisville out of the way, the state of Utah is now enemy No. 1 for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt probably jumps the Utes if it wins out, but I don’t know that the Commodores jump the Big 12 loser if it’s 10-2 BYU or 10-2 Texas Tech. A lot of it may depend on where BYU and Vanderbilt are slotted in the Week 12 CFP rankings Tuesday evening. To feel best about the situation, Vanderbilt fans should be rooting for Cincinnati and TCU against the Cougars and for Texas Tech to win the Big 12.

College Football Playoff

We’ll leave this here for anyone not familiar with the current CFP format for 2025-26:

• The top 5 conference champions will be awarded auto-bids, as they were last year. However, unlike last year, the top 4 of those 5 conference champions will not be guaranteed a first-round bye. Seeds 1-4 are simply be determined by their CFP ranking at the end of the season.

Usually a special teams powerhouse, Iowa’s first punt of the afternoon went completely awry. The Hawkeyes snap was long and right, sailing back into the end zone where the Iowa punter had to kick the ball out of the end zone to avoid an Oregon touchdown.

It’s worth noting that Kinnick Stadium and its current inhabitants are absolutely soaked as a rainstorm moves through the Iowa City area. Most of this game is expected to be played in the rain, so we’re probably in for a bit of an ugly afternoon.

You’d think that would favor Iowa, right?

We mentioned it earlier, but this is a sneaky massive game for the selection of the12 teams that will play in the College Football Playoff. Oregon has lost just once this season, but still lacks a high-quality win. That could change against the Hawkeyes, the No. 20 team in the country that also happens to be looking for a resume-boosting win on Saturday.

Iowa still has a chance, but there’s very little room for error. The Hawkeyes would need to beat Oregon, USC and Nebraska to even have a shot of reaching the postseason.

The Indiana quarterback, facing a 24-20 deficit, led his team all the way down the field — 73 yards — and completed an insane throw to Omar Cooper Jr, who made perhaps an even crazier catch for what would turn out to be the game-winning touchdown. Indiana remains undefeated on the season with a 27-24 win over the upset-hungry Nittany Lions.

Mendoza had a couple of elite throws on this drive, but they all pale in comparison to this pass, under pressure, to Cooper. There are no words:

Obviously, football fans from around the country instantly reacted to Mendoza’s unbelievable drive and touchdown throw. Despite the Nittany Lions now being 3-6 on the year, there is plenty of buzz insisting that we just witnessed Mendoza’s Heisman moment.

It’s tough to disagree. Mendoza and Indiana took 2 uppercuts to the chin from Nick Singelton, and Mendoza turns around and puts together a perfect drive to remain undefeated.

The Crimson Tide guard duo was absolutely crucial for the Tide in what felt like an Elite 8 atmosphere at Madison Square Garden. Let’s start with Philon, who finished with a game-high 25 points on 10-17 shooting while turning it over just once.

But don’t discredit Holloway’s afternoon, either. The junior Alabama guard added 21 points on 9-18 shooting from the field, and that’s despite being unusually cold from 3. In what was a back-and-forth 2nd half, Holloway’s late push gave Alabama a cushion that Philon took and ran with in the final minutes.

Holloway also hit this 3 as the first half expired, giving Alabama some momentum heading to the locker room:

St. John’s is a 2nd weekend NCAA Tournament squad at minimum, folks. If it isn’t obvious already, the guard play for this Alabama team is very, very real.

Alabama is more than a few elite guards, too. We have to mention Taylor Bol Bowen’s effort on both ends, especially in the second half. The 6-10 Florida State transfer is an intriguing prospect and had a huge sequence with around 7 minutes remaining in the game, giving Alabama a lead on one end and blocking a St. John’s attempt at the rim on the other. Bol Bowen finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

We’ll learn more about the Crimson Tide across their next 3 games, which just has to be the toughest stretch any team plays this season: Purdue, at Illinois and vs. Gonzaga in Las Vegas.

Tillman was a monster at Tennessee. The former Vol totaled 64 receptions for 1,081 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021, then had a hot start to the 2022 season before missing a good portion of the year due to injury. All in all, Tillman left Knoxville with 1,622 career passing yards and 17 touchdown receptions.

The former 2-star recruit has had a solid NFL career to this point, too. He was off to an especially hot start to the 2025 season with 106 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns for Cleveland before injuring his hamstring against Detroit in Week 4.

And boy, do the Browns need him. Cleveland has one of the worst offenses in the league and has gotten next to nothing from its receivers. Tight Ends David Njoku and Harold Fannin lead the team in receiving yards as young QB Dillon Gabriel struggles in the backfield.

Kamario Taylor put the Bulldogs on the board, finishing a 14-play, 75-yard touchdown drive with a bruising 4-yard run out of a direct snap. Taylor, Blake Shapen’s backup and a true freshman, powered into the Georgia defensive line on 3rd and 3 and was pushed into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

It was all Mississippi State on that first drive, even if Georgia was able to get a very rare sack of Shapen. Speaking of, Shapen was excellent against a solid Georgia secondary, completing all 4 of his passing attempts for 34 yards with 4 rushing attempts and 8 yards. Fluff Bothwell did most of the rest of the work, toting the rock for 20 yards.

The only real positive for Georgia on its first defensive possession was that aforementioned sack. The Bulldogs simply have to get to Shapen, a capable passer who totaled 381 yards against Texas a few weeks ago. It’s worth noting, however, that Georgia has allowed the opposing team to score the first touchdown in 5 of their 7 conference matchups thus far — and the Bulldogs are 7-1 on the season.

Mississippi State’s defense held up well on the ensuing drive and was able to keep Georgia to a field goal. The Bulldogs lead the visiting Bulldogs 7-3 with plenty of football still to be played.

Now, that’s not to say we haven’t seen some excellent signal callers leading their teams this season. It just means that top-end NFL draft prospects are somewhat lacking according to the folks whose job it is to evaluate them. One unnamed scout told ESPN’s Pete Thamel, “It’s not a stellar class. If you add the maybes [who have eligibility and could leave school], now it gets interesting. The top is better than last year’s class, for sure.”

That quote comes from Thamel’s latest QB1 poll released on Saturday, version 2 of a poll among NFL executives and scouts that ranks the top prospects in the college game. Earlier this season, Oklahoma QB John Mateer and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers sat atop the poll. Now, as we enter Week 11, the poll looks a little different.

Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza (13) tops the version 2 list, followed by Oregon’s Dante Moore (6) and Alabama’s Ty Simpson (3). Mateer, Sellers and Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby also received 1 vote. In total, 25 voters were questioned.

Mendoza is the obvious option for QB1 heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. The Indiana QB has led an undefeated season while passing for 2,124 yards, 25 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. The yardage total is so low because the Hoosiers so thoroughly dominate their opponents that Mendoza is usually out of the game by the 4th quarter.

But among the questions asked to Riley Friday night, perhaps the most intriguing was aimed at the rumors that he’d be leaving USC for any of the numerous high-level job that have come available this season. However, Riley quickly shot down that notion:

“You guys know what I sacrificed to be here,” Riley said. “I’m where I need to be.”

Riley left Oklahoma to take the USC job following the firing of Clay Helton at the end of the 2021 season. He took eventual Heisman winner Caleb Williams with him and posted a strong season in 2022, winning 11 games with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl. Although his record has yet to reach that high set in 2022 at USC, Riley’s track record with quarterbacks (Williams, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray) makes him an attractive option for vacant jobs.

Obviously, there are several vacant jobs in the SEC. LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Auburn are all searching for a new head coach, and the season has yet to even come to a close. Elsewhere, Penn State, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech highlight jobs that will vie for a top-tier head coach very soon.

Let’s get something straight right off the bat: Vanderbilt no longer controls its own destiny. Losing to Texas was a big blow, and Oklahoma beating Tennessee means there are realistically 2 SEC teams in front of the Commodores for a ticket to the CFP. Let me point out, though, that 2-loss Texas and Oklahoma both have to play a pair of top 20 opponents before the season is over — and 3 of those 4 combined matchups come against top-10 opponents.

Vanderbilt, meanwhile, plays just one current AP top 25 team: Tennessee.

The Vols are average at best and in real danger of finishing 7-5 on the season. The Commodores present a terrible matchup for Tennessee, too. Diego Pavia and Vanderbilt’s talented offensive line can walk all over this Volunteers defense if the Commodores don’t get in their own way.

Of course, I didn’t forget that Vandy still has to face Auburn and Kentucky. One doesn’t have its head coach anymore and the other is Kentucky, though, so I like the Commodores’ odds.

That’s a perfect segue into the abject disaster that is Auburn football. The Tigers fell to Kentucky on Saturday and subsequently fired head coach Hugh Freeze following a terribly disappointing 3 years on the Plains. Auburn would need to upset one of Alabama or Vanderbilt this Saturday to reach 6 wins. The Tigers are still listed in the projections thanks to their APR score, which is higher than any other SEC team in a similar situation. In other words, there’s a decent chance Auburn plays in a bowl at 5-7.

The CFP field didn’t change much from last week’s projections, but the ACC, Big 12 and Notre Dame are making things very interesting as we enter the home stretch. The Fighting Irish, per usual, still appear ready to sneak their way into the Playoff so long as they win out.

One final note: Pay close attention to the Oregon Ducks across the next few weeks.

Oregon has kind of flown under the radar since beating Penn State and losing to Indiana. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but Oregon’s resume really isn’t all that great and the Ducks still have to face matchups at Iowa and at Washington, plus a date with Jayden Maiava and USC’s top-tier offense in Eugene here in a couple weeks. SMU football attempted what would have been a game-tying field goal late in the 4th quarter against Miami, but officials ruled that the ball just barely missed the uprights. As a result, Miami regained possession and marched down the field to bleed clock. SMU still has a chance and there’s no telling what would have happened if SMU had made the field goal, but plenty of folks online seem to think that the officials were wrong and that the ball just barely did stay within the uprights.

Manning received unfair expectations throughout the offseason thanks in part to his last name, but he’s remedied the struggles that he had in the early season against Ohio State and other non-conference opponents. Ahead of SMU-Miami, the scoreboard at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas showed a trivia challenge that posed the following question: What is the name of SMU’s football stadium?

For any diehard SMU fan, this is an easy answer. For most SMU fans, it probably didn’t take much thinking. That’s not the mishap though. No, the problem is that just above the scoreboard, in massive letters, it reads, “Gerald J. Ford Stadium.”

Hopefully for SMU fans, this trivia question isn’t a bad omen for the Mustang’s afternoon. No. 10 Miami comes to town needing to further prove itself as the top contender out of the ACC, while SMU — still technically alive for a Playoff berth — looks to improve their ACC record and score what would be its best win of the season.

There are some factors on SMU’s side Saturday afternoon. For starters, until today, Miami had yet to leave the Sunshine State. For another, Miami will be without standout receiver CJ Daniels, who was ruled out Saturday morning after being considered a game-time decision heading into Week 10.

Saturday’s game is set to kick off at Noon on ESPN.

Now, the searches begin. Naturally, some fans have already linked recently retired head coach Nick Saban to one of these jobs; LSU. Saban won LSU a national title in 2003 before going on to dominate at Alabama, and he’s been using his time to host College GameDay on Saturdays since his retirement in early 2024. With LSU (or any of the other great jobs listed above) now open, would Saban even consider the prospect of returning to the sidelines?

Saban briefly addressed that question on Saturday. During the College GameDay pointer segment, Saban mentioned that he’ll be staying right where he is. “I like my team here,” Saban said.

Saban also mentioned that he is “not interested” in a return to coaching while on the Pat McAfee Show last week. So, for the few LSU fans out there who are serious about wanting Saban back on the sidelines, you appear to be out of luck.

This was the expected response from Saban, who cited his age as a major reason for hanging up the cape. Obviously, the ever-changing landscape of college football has likely played a role in several coaching moves across the last few years, too; from football to basketball and so on.

Saturday’s slate is a good one, and perhaps one of the best games on TV is Vanderbilt at Texas. The Commodores are in the middle of one of their best seasons in recent history, and they have a real shot at the College Football Playoff — especially if they can escape Austin with a win. Incredibly, this will be Vanderbilt’s first trip to Austin since 1903.

And Texas will certainly need the homefield advantage. The Longhorns have struggled against teams of consequence this season and already fell to Ohio State and Florida. Vanderbilt is the best team the Longhorns have played since Arch Manning was completely befuddled by Ohio State’s defense in Columbus.

So, why is this matchup so important? For starters, both teams are still alive for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Vanderbilt has lost just once on the year, thanks in part to star quarterback Diego Pavia. The veteran QB is smart with the football and a threat through the air and with his legs. Only Arkansas’s Taylen Green has rushed for more yards as a QB this season in the SEC.

Texas, on the other hand, can’t afford another loss and will need to lean on its defense and home crowd Saturday. It’s a task that’ll be made that much tougher without Michael Taaffe, Texas’s star defensive back who will miss Week 10’s game.

That brings us to Arch Manning, who will need to play the game of his life against a Vanderbilt defense that has drastically improved. Manning had 3 touchdowns last Saturday to fuel the Longhorns’ comeback win over Mississippi State.

It’s tough to know what to expect in this one. Will Texas’s defense keep Pavia and Co in check or is Vanderbilt set to post yet another statement win?
