No. 3 Texas A&M will go for a 10th win in a row during a home matchup against South Carolina on Saturday.

ESPN’s FPI has weighed in on the win probabilities for the Aggies and Gamecocks for the Week 12 matchup. Texas A&M is given an 85.3 percent chance of winning, with South Carolina at a meager 14.7 percent.

It’s not surprising given Texas A&M’s torrid run and South Carolina’s struggles. The Aggies are coming off a 38-17 victory at then-No. 22 Missouri on Saturday.

Texas A&M has an excellent offense, ranking 12th in points per game (37.8) and 19th in rushing yards (204.9) nationally. Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed has passed for 2,193 yards with 19 touchdowns while also rushing for 378 yards and 6 scores.

Meanwhile, South Carolina is coming off a bye week and is 1-6 in SEC play. The Gamecocks dropped their last game 30-14 at Ole Miss on Nov. 1. South Carolina recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Shula, as the team currently ranks 122nd in points per game (19.7), 128th in rushing yards (100.8), and 105th in passing yards (193.3).

South Carolina at Texas A&M is set for a noon ET kickoff (ESPN).

The Group of Five now has access to an automatic bid for its highest ranked team in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, if ESPN’s Paul Finebaum had his way, only the power conferences would be granted entry into the CFP.

During Wednesday’s edition of First Take, Finebaum refuted Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s claim that there’s too many SEC teams in the current top 12 rankings by making an example out of South Florida.

The 7-2 Bulls, out of the American conference, are ranked No. 24 as they vie for the prized automatic bid. South Florida began the season with ranked victories vs. Boise State and Florida.

Yet Finebaum is peeved by what he deems to be inferior teams getting an undeserved golden ticket.

https://twitter.com/FirstTake/status/1988637865308234178

“What about putting the best in? I don’t see Major League, I don’t see the NFL going ‘Ah, the Chiefs. They’ve been there too many times. Let’s put the Patriots in. Doggie, this is supposed to be about excellence, not about being fair,” Finebaum said. “This is not the little leagues where we give a second, third, fourth, and fifth place trophy. This should be the best.”

Finebaum compares the Group of Five to the minor leagues in professional baseball.

“It’s already a convoluted system because we let the group of whatever in, the Group of Five with South Florida. That division really has no business playing,” Finebaum said. “That’s like letting the Triple-A best team into the Major League playoffs.”

South Florida will aim to continue building its case with a key road game at unranked Navy, who is atop the American standings. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET (ESPN2) on Saturday.

One of the biggest games on the docket this weekend in college football is the SEC showdown between No. 10 Texas and host No. 5 Georgia. The Bulldogs are on a 5-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have responded from a loss at Florida with 4 consecutive victories.

FOX Sports’ Urban Meyer made his prediction for the spread on the massive matchup during the most recent edition of The Triple Option podcast. Meyer is confident that Texas will cover the 6.5 point spread in what he expects to be a tight contest.

“Texas had a bye week and just came off their best game…I’m going to warn (Texas coach Steve Sarkisian) that I’m going to quit picking them. I’ve been picking them for 2 years. I like him as coach. I like their players. I’m not going to say who’s going to win. They’ll beat the spread,” Meyer said. “To me this is a flat game. The way Texas is playing right now…I think Texas will have a chance to win it but I don’t think Georgia will win by 6.5.”

Georgia is coming off a 41-21 victory at Mississippi State. Texas’ last game was a 34-31 home win vs. then-No. 9 Vanderbilt.

This will be a rematch of last season’s SEC Championship Game, which Georgia won 22-19. Texas at Georgia is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff (ABC) on Saturday.

A former Florida Gators basketball star is injured again for a lengthy amount of time in his NBA career. Los Angeles Clippers guard Bradley Beal has a fractured hip which will require season-ending surgery, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The 3-time NBA All-Star is in his first season with the Clippers after spending 2 injury-marred years with the Phoenix Suns. Beal’s agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed the news to Charania.

“We met with numerous doctors and specialists around the country in collaboration with the entire Clippers medical staff over the last few days, and came to the decision unanimously that the surgery will allow Brad to have a full and complete recovery,” Bartelstein said.

Beal spent the first 11 seasons of his NBA career with the Washington Wizards. The Wizards drafted Beal with the No. 3 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Injuries have plagued Beal since becoming a pro, as he’s only played at least 75 games during 3 seasons, a stretch from 2016-2019. Beal was selected to the All-NBA Third Team in 2021 when he averaged a career-high 31.3 points in 60 games.

During his lone season at Florida, Beal was a First-team All-SEC selection. Coming out of high school in Missouri, Beal was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2011.

Shane Beamer pushes back on criticism of coordinator hires https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/shane-beamer-pushes-back-on-criticism-of-coordinator-hires/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 22:17:47 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=524333 South Carolina head coach Shame Beamer got defensive when asked about the lack of success for his offensive coordinators.

South Carolina is struggling with a 3-6 overall record and 1-6 mark in the SEC this season. The Gamecocks have been woeful on offense, ranking 121st in points per game (19.7).

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer recently made the decision to fire offensive coordinator Mike Shula. The interim offensive coordinator is now Mike Furrey, who has been South Carolina’s wide receivers coach since last season.

This means that Beamer is in the market for a fourth offensive coordinator since taking over the program in 2021. However, during his Tuesday press conference, Beamer pushed back on the criticism of his previous offensive coordinators, which also included Marcus Satterfield and Dowell Loggains.

“I push back a little bit on the narrative that we haven’t necessarily gotten these, I haven’t gotten these coordinator hires right,” Beamer said, per The State. “Have we been efficient enough on offense and consistent enough on offense? Absolutely not. But let’s also not act like we brought in three coordinators, and we’ve just fired all of them, and we just threw up our hands.”

All 3 past offensive coordinators had pro backgrounds. Beamer notes that while he’d love to hire a coach with college experience, he isn’t opposed to another NFL candidate.

“If we hire from outside, someone that’s been a college coordinator, I think that would be awesome,” Beamer said. “But if the best person is from the NFL and can fit what we want to do here offensively, then so be it.”

South Carolina will look to get going offensively this Saturday with a tough test at No. 3 Texas A&M (noon ET/ESPN).

Legendary college football head coach Nick Saban is enjoying life in retirement. However, President Donald Trump believes the 7-time national champion Saban is the right person to take the lead on improving the conditions across college sports.

During a Tuesday appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Trump was effusive in his praise for the 74-year-old Saban, whom he fostered a relationship with thanks to multiple championship trips to the White House.

“I got to know him because he brought him team to the White House. He won a lot and I got to know him. He’s a fantastic guy. He’s somebody that really should get involved in college sports in terms of making sure that it all works out,” Trump said. “What’s happening is it looks like it’s not working out too well for colleges, for most of the people. A lot of the lesser sports are being totally terminated. It’s a shame.”

Saban is currently an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay and also owns a line of car dealerships. Yet, Trump is fully confident that Saban could stabilize the system, including for the non-revenue college sports, if he ever had the interest in getting involved.

“It was almost like a training ground for the Olympics. A lot of those training grounds are being lost. Nick knows this stuff better than anybody. He’s really active in it,” Trump said. “I think they ought to let Nick Saban take a good strong look at it. From my standpoint, I’d listen to what he has to say.”

No. 4 Alabama is riding an 8-game winning streak heading into a key matchup vs. visiting No. 12 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. However, the running game has been subpar.

SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic believes the Crimson Tide should approach their running attack with the devotion of solid marriage. During Tuesday’s edition of McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, he cited a clip from Nick Freitas’ podcast as an example. After playing the original clip, Cubelic then had his producer cue up a remixed version in which phrases were replaced with “running”.

https://twitter.com/WJOX945/status/1988322950702100549

“It needs dedication. It needs timing. It needs commitment. Even if a game or a quarter or a series it goes away from you, you know what? It’s always still going to be there,” Cubelic said. “You can always turn around and hand that ball off again. You can always toss that ball to the running back.”

Alabama is 120th nationally with 111.9 rushing yards per game. Cubelic added that traditional methods of running the ball are tried and true if consistently incorporated, so he advises the Crimson Tide to stay patient.

“Now we don’t recommend jet sweeps and you judge the run game on that. However, if you were to run a duo or a counter or a power or an inside zone or a toss sweep, it never truly goes away. But as Nick said, you’ve got to be committed to it first.”

Alabama vs. Oklahoma is set for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday (ABC).

Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams is striving to make a name for himself like past Crimson Tide stars at the position. Williams is actually getting words of wisdom from Alabama legend Julio Jones, who shared some advice before the Crimson Tide’s 20-9 victory vs. LSU.

The Alabama native grew up a huge fan of the 7-time Pro Bowler. Williams shared with the media on Tuesday the feedback Jones gave him before the win against the Tigers.

“Just talking a couple basic things,” Williams said. “Just to help out in routes and when the ball is in the air, nothing too serious.”

Williams finished with 3 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown. Overall this season, Williams has recorded 36 receptions for 528 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Williams explained what aspects of the now-retired Jones’s game that he aims to emulate.

“Definitely his physicality and his mentality on each individual play,” Williams said. “He plays like its his last play every play. You could just definitely tell, like, he loves football and just continuing to have the attitude of gratitude day-in and day-out, and you just see it. Your film, you can’t wipe that away, so when you turn on his tape, you can’t miss it.”

Next up for Williams and No. 4 Alabama is a massive home game vs. No. 15 Oklahoma on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET/ABC).

Auburn is currently in the midst of a head coaching search to replace Hugh Freeze. One of its all-time greats is applying plenty of pressure on the program to make the correct hire.

Former Heisman Trophy quarterback Cam Newton shared his thoughts about Auburn during a recent episode of his 4thand1 podcast, which AL.com transcribed. Newton, who helped guide Auburn to its last national championship in 2010, is firm in his assessment of the necessary qualifications for the next Tigers coach.

“Number one, find you somebody who can recruit,” Newton said. “You can’t go to the Kentucky Derby with donkeys. Need a stallion… Number two, I’m gonna tell you who else you need. You need to find somebody that other coaches respect, and he can assemble his coaching staff accordingly.”

The 36-year-old former NFL MVP also added that whoever is hired has to have a full grasp of the pressure of coaching in the SEC.

“Last but not least, you need to hire a coach that understands the SEC, man. You gotta win yesterday, coach. We ain’t got time for you to develop a way of going about it. You ain’t got time to introduce your culture. You ain’t got time for a fan base that’s been fiending for some type of something, for you to say, ‘It’s gonna take time.’”

D.J. Durkin is currently Auburn’s interim head coach. Auburn lost its first game under Durkin 45-38 at then-No. 16 Vanderbilt on Saturday in an inspired effort. Next up for Auburn after a bye week is a home matchup vs. Mercer on Nov. 22 (2 p.m. ET/SEC Network+).

Life is great at the moment for Lane Kiffin on and off the field. Ole Miss is currently No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Meanwhile, Kiffin’s son is getting some quality reps as a quarterback at Oxford High School.

During his Monday press conference, Kiffin was asked about what it’s like to watch Knox play. Kiffin explained that he’s extremely proud but also tries to keep a low profile.

“I don’t much. I stay out of it. I think Coach [Christopher] Cutcliffe does a great job with the team, with the offense, with the quarterbacks specifically. I just was never going to be that parent because I’ve dealt with a lot of parents like that and especially at that position,” Kiffin said. “I try to be the refreshing quarterback parent.”

The 6-2 Knox Kiffin is in the Class of 2028 and visited Alabama over the weekend. Kiffin added that it’s even more special when his daughter is in the crowd with him.

“I’m just excited that he gets the opportunity to play. They’ve got such a cool team and they have all these comebacks. It was just awesome to watch,” Kiffin said. “The whole thing is really cool watching him and then Landry my daughter is next to me watching him.”

Texas A&M is currently No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings. However, a rival SEC head coach believes the Aggies should be at the top.

During his Monday press conference, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin made a public plea for Texas A&M to be the No. 1 team in the nation.

“Texas A&M being No. 3, what more do you want them to do to be 1?…” Kiffin said. “They went up to Notre Dame and won…What good did that do if that’s not rewarded? They have the highest metrics of everybody and not No. 1.”

Texas A&M is particularly dangerous offensively. The Aggies are 12th in points per game (37.8) and 19th nationally in rushing yards (204.9).

Texas A&M is coming off an impressive 38-17 victory at No. 22 Missouri. The Aggies have won 3 games against ranked opponents this season. Texas A&M also defeated then-No. 8 Notre Dame 41-40 and then-No. 20 LSU 49-25 each on the road. Texas A&M will get another ranked matchup in the regular season finale at No. 11 Texas on Nov. 28.

Tennessee has lost a 4-star commitment to defending national champion Ohio State.

Class of 2026 ATH Legend Bey is flipping his commitment from the Volunteers to the Buckeyes, according to On3. The 6-foot, 185-pound Bey was previously committed to Tennessee dating back to June.

The Texas native is considered by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 24 ATH in the nation and the No. 47 in-state prospect. Bey also is a track athlete and that speed makes him extremely difficult to defend. Playing quarterback in high school is also regarded as a positive as Bey moves over to a new position when he gets to college.

Dynamic high school quarterback who projects as a playmaking skill weapon…Plays with sudden downhill acceleration and corresponding top-end speed. Also displays short-area redirecting twitch to evade in tight quarters and set up explosive cuts,” 247Sports Scouting Analyst Gabe Brooks wrote. “Years spent as a high school QB should aid awareness/football IQ when transitioning to a different skill position. May need time to acclimate to that new full-time spot, but could provide immediate return game value.

Currently, for the Class of 2026 team rankings, Ohio State is now No. 7 while Tennessee is slotted at No. 8 nationally.

“They might not have the best resume but they have the best team in the country…” Klatt said. “The defense is the best unit in all of college football.”

Klatt is impressed with Indiana but worries about their health as the regular season winds down.

“They don’t have the depth necessary to survive a lot of injuries. So they need to get healthy and they need to stay healthy.”

Klatt sees a lot of potential in Texas A&M but cautions against its run defense.

“A&M is a great football team. My only concern is their run defense…” Klatt said. “Somebody’s going to be able to run the football on them down the stretch and that’s going to take them out of their game.”

Klatt credits Georgia for finally putting together a complete game effort in the win vs. Mississippi State.

“Georgia finally goes from the team that’s just toying with everybody to putting the hammer down in the SEC…” Klatt said. “That’s not a team I would love to see in the playoff.”

The next edition of the CFP selection committee rankings will be unveiled on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Eastern Washington fell to Montana on Saturday in one of the most brutal ways to ever lose a college football game.

The Eagles lost to the host Grizzlies 29-24 on a fumbled spike attempt by quarterback Jake Schakel in the red zone as time expired. The stunning late-game miscue dropped Eastern Washington to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Big Sky.

Meanwhile, Montana remains undefeated at 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big Sky. Montana is battling with Montana State, who is also undefeated in conference play, for the top spot in the Big Sky.

It was a wildly up-and-down performance from the freshman quarterback, who completed 43 of his 63 passes for 451 yards and 2 touchdowns but also had 2 interceptions and that game-deciding mistake on the final play.

The Washington native came out of high school as the No. 24 in-state prospect and No. 94 quarterback in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. Schakel held offers from FBS programs such as Colorado State, California, Florida Atlantic, and Nevada.

Eastern Washington will attempt to recover from this horrific loss as it takes on visiting Northern Colorado next weekend. Meanwhile, Montana heads to Portland State on Saturday to close out its road slate.

No. 18 Miami is looking to bounce back from last weekend’s road loss at SMU. Miami is hosting Syracuse on Saturday and things are getting testy at Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami blew a second half lead at Syracuse in last year’s regular season finale to be eliminated from the ACC Championship Game and the long-time rivals definitely have bad blood. Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and Syracuse head coach Fran Brown had a heated exchange during the game on Saturday.

It got to the point where the officials nearly had to intercede to prevent any further escalation.

Syracuse’s defense played well in the first half, but Miami took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

Miami quarterback Carson Beck connected with Malachi Toney on a 14-yard score with 2:13 left in the first half. Beck also tossed a 61-yard score to Keelan Marion with 9:57 to go in the third quarter. Keionte Scott had a 38-yard pick-6 off a pass from Syracuse quarterback Rickie Collins with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter.

The pressure is on the 55-year-old Cristobal as Miami has never reached the College Football Playoff. Cristobal has not guided Miami to a bowl victory since taking over 2022.

Auburn is in its first game since firing head coach Hugh Freeze. However, interim head coach D.J. Durkin is off to a strong start, as Auburn leads host No. 16 Vanderbilt 20-10 at halftime.

The 47-year-old Durkin is also Auburn’s defensive coordinator and that unit is looking solid against Vanderbilt so far. Auburn blanked Vanderbilt in the first quarter and defensive end Keldric Faulk recovered a fumble by Vanderbilt’s Makhilyn Young in the first half.

https://twitter.com/ESPNCFB/status/1987287487446741282

Auburn had 3 players with at least 4 tackles at halftime: safeties Kaleb Harris and AnQuon Fegans, as well as linebacker Robert Woodyard Jr..

Offensively, Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels completed 14 of his 18 passes for a touchdown while also rushing for 53 yards and a score. Eric Singleton Jr. caught Daniels’ touchdown pass in the first quarter. Daniels’ 11-yard rushing touchdown came in the second quarter.

Auburn is looking to avoid a losing streak after falling 10-3 vs. visiting Kentucky in Freeze’s final game. Freeze finished with a 15-19 overall mark and 6-16 record in SEC play at Auburn.

This is the final road game of the season for the Tigers. Auburn has a bye next week followed by home games vs. Mercer and rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

It appears that Missouri could have some more injury woes at the quarterback position. According to ESPN’s Katie George, quarterback Matt Zollers injured his hand during No. 22 Missouri’s game vs. No. 3 Texas A&M on Saturday.

Zollers didn’t come out of the game in the first half, yet George stated that it’s unknown if the injury will have a lingering effect.

The 6-foot-4 freshman has taken over the starting role in the absence of Beau Pribula, who injured his leg in Missouri’s 17-10 loss at Vanderbilt on Oct. 25. Mizzou also lost quarterback Sam Horn to a season-ending injury earlier this year.

Heading into this game, Zollers completed 20 of his 29 passes for 213 yards with 2 touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 92.3 QBR.

Coming out of high school, the native of Royersford, Pennsylvania was regarded by 247Sports as the No. 9 quarterback in the nation and the No. 2 in-state prospect.

Missouri is aiming for its first victory vs. a ranked opponent this season after losses to Alabama and Vanderbilt.

No. 5 Georgia became just the ninth FBS program with 900 victories after a 41-21 win at Mississippi State on Saturday. However, there was an even more personal meaning behind the win for the Bulldogs.

After the game, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart dedicated the victory to university employee Kim Allen, who recently passed away. Smart glowed about the impact Allen made on himself and the team.

“We dedicated this win to miss Kim Allen, who was a coworker of ours, worked in our facility. She was an incredible lady. Worked there four or five years, every morning I came to work she was the first person I saw,” Smart said. “She was there everyday at 5:30 AM and a lot of the players got really close to miss Kim, and she passed this last week and it was very emotional for a lot of our players. I’ve never met a more positive person than Miss Kim, so we wanted to make sure she enjoyed that from up above.”

This was the fifth consecutive victory for Georgia after falling to Alabama in Week 4. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton had an excellent showing with 264 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air.

Georgia will aim to keep it rolling next Saturday against visiting No. 11 Texas (7:30 p.m. ET/ABC).

No. 5 Georgia reached an impressive milestone during its 41-21 victory at Mississippi State on Saturday.

With the victory, Georgia is now the ninth FBS program to amass 900 wins all-time.

https://twitter.com/GeorgiaFootball/status/1987262485976523117

The top 10 FBS programs for the most all-time wins are Michigan followed by Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State, Nebraska, Georgia, and USC.

Georgia is currently on a 5-game winning streak after falling to Alabama in Week 4. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 18 of his 29 passes for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bulldogs running back Nate Frazier finished with 181 yards and a score on the ground.

Georgia linebacker Raylen Wilson tallied 6 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Georgia defensive back KJ Bolden had a game-high 10 tackles including a tackle for loss. Georgia gave up all 3 of its touchdowns on runs by Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor.

Next up for Georgia is a test against No. 11 Texas, the No. 5 program on the all-time wins list. Texas leads the all-time series 4-3 vs. Georgia. However, the Bulldogs won both of the last 2 meetings which both came in 2024. Most recently, Georgia defeated Texas 22-19 in the SEC Championship Game.

Texas at Georgia is set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Nov. 15 (ABC).

One of the most highly anticipated games this weekend will be No. 3 Texas A&M at No. 22 Missouri. Undefeated Texas A&M has reeled off 8 straight wins, while Missouri will aim to notch its first victory vs. a ranked opponent this season.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy expects it to be a close contest in the SEC showdown. During the most recent edition of his Always College Football show, McElroy explains why Texas A&M will win but Missouri will also cover the spread.

RELATED: Calling all Missouri residents! Follow SDS for updates on the upcoming launch and how to score a DraftKings Missouri promo code!

“I think this is going to be a really low-scoring game. I fully expect Missouri’s defense to battle. I think they’ll hold down the fort and I think they’ll make it a 1-possession game in the fourth quarter. So expecting low scoring here but ultimately it’s Texas A&M and their defensive line that will prevail,” McElroy said. “I like the Aggies but close. I would take the points in what should be a very entertaining football game between 2 really well-coached football teams.”

Texas A&M had a bye last weekend after defeating host LSU 49-25. Meanwhile, Missouri also had a bye after losing 17-10 at then-No. 10 Vanderbilt.

Texas A&M at Missouri is slated for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff (ABC).

No. 5 Georgia is coming off an emotional 24-20 victory vs. rival Florida and has a home game vs. No. 11 Texas next weekend. However, the task at hand on Saturday is a road matchup at Mississippi State.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy believes the battle of the Bulldogs will be tighter than most expect. During the most recent edition of his Always College Football show, McElroy is predicting that Mississippi State will put up a strong fight before Georgia flexes in the second half for a fifth straight victory.

“I think it’s probably the hardest spot of the season for them. Between the Florida game and the Texas game lies a little trip to Starkville, Mississippi with an 11 a.m. kick. I’ll take Georgia but I think Mississippi State will cover here,” McElroy said. “I’ll even go as far as to say I wouldn’t be that surprised if Mississippi State is leading at halftime. Then Georgia will storm back and win like they always seem to do.”

Georgia has won its last 3 games by 10 points or less, so it’s highly possible this could be another dogfight (pun intended). Especially with Mississippi State building momentum after securing its first SEC win of the season last weekend in a 38-35 road victory at Arkansas.

Georgia at Mississippi State will be televised on ESPN. Mississippi State is striving for its first win against Georgia since 2010.

Brian Kelly will have to find another head coaching opportunity after being fired by LSU in late October. In a records request obtained by WBRZ News, an email from Kelly to LSU reveals that he’s open to a buyout settlement. Kelly has a reported $54 million buyout.

Kelly’s email was directed to then-LSU athletics director Scott Woodward, then executive deputy AD Verge Ausberry, LSU chief operating officer Julie Cromer and LSU football general manager Austin Thomas.

“As we discussed in our meeting, I’m open to your desire to reach a settlement of what’s owed to me under the contract, although of course it would have to make sense financially,” Brian Kelly said. “Despite your decision to let me go today, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead this program over the last four years and wish you all the best going forward.”

Negotiations are in progress between Kelly and LSU as both sides aim to find a resolution to reduce the buyout amount, which stands in its entirety as 90 percent of his 10-year, $95 million contract.

The 64-year-old Kelly finished with a 34-14 mark at LSU. However, he failed to guide the Tigers to an SEC championship or spot in the College Football Playoff.

McAfee is urging all parties involved to find common ground so that fans can find easier access to ESPN’s sports coverage. McAfee believes sports plays a major factor in societal unity, so it’s paramount to reach a swift agreement.

“We need to be able to access this [expletive] easily,” McAfee said. “And also, sports are a unifier, man. Come on. We don’t want to hear about business [expletive].”

Yet, McAfee is realistic about the challenges that are currently halting any progress.

“Any time both sides feel like they have leverage and they feel like they have to to survive, that is a tough deal to get done,” McAfee said.

No. 6 Ole Miss picked up a second straight victory with a 30-14 victory vs. visiting South Carolina last weekend. A key factor was the tenacious defense, and CBS Sports is honoring Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding for that performance.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz named Golding as the top SEC coordinator for Week 10.

It was the lowest amount of points allowed in SEC play this season for Ole Miss. Ole Miss held South Carolina to 230 total yards and 3-for-13 on third down efficiency.

South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw 2 interceptions to Suntarine Perkins and Wydett Wiliams Jr. Ole Miss also racked up 6 sacks, led by 1.5 from Perkins.

Ole Miss smothered South Carolina’s running game, holding the Gamecocks to 1.6 yards per rush on 32 attempts.

The 41-year-old Golding is in his third season as Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator. Golding is also Ole Miss’ inside linebackers coach. Prior to Ole Miss, Golding was most recently Alabama’s defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach from 2018-2022. Golding is a Louisiana native who played safety at Delta State from 2002-2005.

Next up for Golding and Ole Miss is a home game vs. The Citadel on Saturday (1 p.m. ET/SEC Network+).

After firing Hugh Freeze, Auburn now joins other SEC programs such as Florida, LSU and Arkansas in the hunt for new head coaches. ESPN’s Peter Burns believes Auburn is the best of the bunch when it comes to SEC vacancies.

During an appearance on SportsCenter, Burns explained why Auburn is a desirable program for any head coach to step into.

“I put Auburn right now, as far as the four in the SEC, I actually put them at the top of the heap. Some people say LSU is a crown jewel. I get it. But the reason why Auburn is in a great spot right now is honestly because Hugh Freeze was hired,” Burns said. “What I mean by that, when Hugh was hired by Auburn, all of a sudden the boosters, the powerbrokers, all of the guys that whisper on the message boards, they were all in alignment.”

Burns believes Auburn is better-positioned to offer what a head coach needs to be successful as opposed to the other aforementioned SEC programs.

“So I can argue right now that Auburn has the alignment that LSU doesn’t have. That Arkansas doesn’t have right now and even Florida doesn’t have right now,” Burns said. “Great fanbase, great facilities.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has already been fined once for criticizing the ACC’s officials after a 46-45 loss to Duke last weekend. He made more comments about referees during his press conference on Tuesday.

During his most recent press conference, Swinney slammed the condition of college football officiating, while also pointing out concerns with the legalization of sports gambling.

“In the meantime we got gambling issues going on and people are being suspended … refs are people too,” Swinney said. “If they are a part of the game, then by God, they ought to be part of the game They ought to be a part of the accountability and they ought to be a part of the consequences. Not just behind some shadowy curtain. They ought to have to answer for it.

“There’s judgement calls and all that. We just have to disagree to disagree. But there’s also absolute, flat-out misses with no consequences.”

Swinney was livid at a controversial pass interference call on a 4th-and-10 from Clemson‘s 18-yard-line with under a minute remaining. Duke went on to score a touchdown on the next play, and the ensuing two-point conversion ended up as the game-winner.

“That’s one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen in a game ever in my entire coaching career. Ever,” Swinney said in his post-game press conference after the Duke game.

Swinney was fined $10,000 by the ACC for his comments.

Typically Clemson is a perennial ACC power. However, the Tigers are 3-5 overall and currently 12th place in the ACC. Clemson will aim to get back on track with a home game vs. Florida State on Saturday (7 p.m. ET/ACC Network).

Boston College is off to a 1-8 start this season after a 25-10 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday. It’s a steep regression from Bill O’Brien’s first year with the program last year when he guided the Eagles to a 7-6 record and trip to the Pinstripe Bowl.

During O’Brien’s Tuesday press conference, a reporter began to ask a question regarding the fan response to what has been a disappointing season so far. O’Brien interrupted the question and took aim at the reporter.

“I’m glad you’re down, I’m not down, nobody’s down. We’re fighting, we’re competing. It’s the second year of this program, Mike. You always come in here with these down questions,” O’Brien said. “You show up like once a month or something like that … I don’t know what year you graduated from BC but this is a program that we’re building. Nobody here is down. We’re positive. We’re going to show up and play our [expletive] off against SMU … The sun is up and we’re fighting. That’s my message to the fans.”

Hooker signed with the Panthers’ practice squad this season on Aug. 27. The Detroit Lions selected Hooker in the 3rd round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Hooker didn’t play during his rookie season as he continued to recover from the ACL injury that occurred while at Tennessee. Last season, Hooker appeared in 3 games, completing 6 of his 9 passes for 21 yards.

Hooker began his college career with 4 seasons at Virginia Tech. Hooker redshirted in 2017 and saw limited reps the next season. In his last 2 seasons at Virginia Tech, Hooker stepped into the starting position, combining for 22 passing touchdowns and 14 rushing scores.

Then Hooker moved on to Tennessee for 2 tremendous seasons. Hooker notched 58 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing scores in his time as a Volunteer before going down with his injury. In 2022, Hooker was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year and a First-team All-SEC selection.

The Greensboro, North Carolina native was regarded by 247Sports as a 4-star prospect coming out of high school.

Ever since Nick Saban decided to retire after the 2023 season, the college football world has wondered if he’ll ever get the itch to coach again. There’s even rumors being floated about Saban now that there’s a variety of intriguing vacancies, especially in the SEC.

However, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit is steadfast in his belief that the 7-time national champion head coach is fully finished with the sport. During his Nonstop podcast with Joey Galloway, Herbstreit gushed about the joy Saban has found in retirement.

“You couldn’t pull Nick Saban off the GameDay desk…Stop bringing up Nick Saban for all these jobs. He’s not going anywhere. My man is enjoying his life,” Herbstreit said. “He told me: ‘For 50 years I’ve been in a hurry. I’ve been late to something.’ Now he’s got Mercedes-Benz dealerships and Ferrari dealerships…He’s the happiest he’s probably been in a long, long time. He and Miss Terry.”

The 74-year-old Saban is arguably the greatest college football head coach of all-time. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2025. It’s natural that his name will come up regarding job searches. Yet, like Herbstreit mentioned, Saban appears content with his decision to limit his football work to College GameDay.

Joel Klatt offers harsh assessment of Auburn job https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/joel-klatt-offers-harsh-assessment-of-auburn-job/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 20:41:41 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=522182 FOX Sports' Joel Klatt believes Auburn needs to look in the mirror when assessing the quality of head coaching candidates.

Auburn is now in the running for a new head coach after firing Hugh Freeze over the weekend. However, FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt believes Auburn should temper its expectations when it comes to the quality of candidates.

During an appearance on The Next Round, Klatt offered a harsh assessment of the Auburn job. According to Klatt, Auburn doesn’t hold the same level of prestige as a program when compared to in-state rival Alabama.

Their expectations are over their skis. They aren’t even the best job in their own state,” Klatt said.

“Like to be a good job, you’ve got to be a top job, top- two to four job in your conference. They’re not even the best job in their own state. And it’s not even like close.”

Klatt continued to make the Alabama and Auburn comparisons.

“Yet the problem is, is that Auburn’s expectations are in line with Alabama’s expectations. And it’s just like, hey, like that ain’t it,” he said.

“You know, it’s like, it’s like the sister of the beauty queen that just ain’t quite, you know what I mean? Like, you know, she comes along a few years later, and she’s like, ‘My sister was the homecoming queen.’ It’s like, yeah, well, you ain’t your sister.”

While Auburn searches for Freeze’s successor, defensive coordinator/linebackers coach DJ Durkin is serving as interim head coach. The 47-year–old Durkin is in his second season with Auburn after most recently serving in the same roles for Texas A&M (2022-2023). Durkin also has head coaching experience at Maryland from 2016-2018. In that span, Durkin posted a 10-15 record with a 5-13 mark in Big Ten play.

Durkin will make his head coaching debut for Auburn on Saturday against host No. 15 Vanderbilt. The game is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised on the SEC Network.

The first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled on Nov. 4. In the meantime, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shared his top 5 prior to the official CFP rankings.

During his Nonstop podcast with Joey Galloway, Herbstreit listed Ohio State at the top, followed by Indiana, Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia. However, Herbstreit believes the committee could aim to stir it up by putting Indiana at No. 1 ahead of the defending national champions in its initial rankings.

https://twitter.com/KirkHerbstreit/status/1985487494771589588

“Historically the committee with their first rankings likes to be different. They like people to talk about their rankings,” Herbstreit said. “Wouldn’t shock me if Indiana, maybe because they’ve been so dominant every week, might be [No.] 1. But me personally it doesn’t bother me 1 way or the other.”

Ohio State is coming off a 38-14 victory vs. visiting Penn State and will head to Purdue on Saturday (1 p.m. ET/Big Ten Network). Indiana routed Maryland 55-10 last weekend and will face host Penn State on Saturday (12 p.m.).

The first CFP rankings will be announced on Nov 4. at 8 p.m. on ESPN. There’ll be four more weeks of Tuesday rankings before the final installment on Selection Sunday (Dec. 7, 12 p.m.).

Auburn fired head coach Hugh Freeze in large part because of offensive woes. Now that DJ Durkin is Auburn’s interim head coach, he’s delegating offensive coordinator and running backs coach Derrick Nix as the sole play-caller.

Durkin has faith that Nix will turn around Auburn’s offense, which is coming off scoring just 3 points vs. Kentucky.

“He’ll be the play caller every down and he’s the sole play-caller,” Durkin said via the Montgomery Advertiser. “I have extreme confidence in Derrick. He and I have worked together in previous stops as well. Another great person and a great coach. I think the players really respond to him, they understand where he’s coming from. I think Derrick is going to do a great job. We’ll be aggressive in everything we do.”

The 45-year-old Nix is in his second season as Auburn’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach. This is Nix’s first stint as an offensive coordinator. Nix previously coached at Ole Miss from 2008-2023 in a variety of roles, capped off with associate head coach.

Next up for Auburn is a road contest at No. 15 Vanderbilt on Nov. 8. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.

No. 5 Georgia had its share of struggles during a poor first half vs. Florida at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs and Gators are tied at 10 at halftime.

Georgia’s rushing attack has been stifled. The Bulldogs are only averaging 3.7 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Georgia quarterback Gunnar Stockton has been uneven with an interception and fumble. On the other side of the ball, the defense didn’t get much pressure up front and finished with no sacks.

Georgia has won the last 4 matchups in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party but it’ll take a better effort to keep the streak going.

Georgia’s fans are blasting the coaching staff on social media, in particular offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann.

Here’s a sampling of what’s been said online:

The 51-year-old Bobo is also a Georgia native and a former quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1993-1997. Bobo has been Georgia’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2023. This is Bobo’s second stint as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, having also served in the role from 2007-2014.

No. 10 Miami is now 1-2 in its last 3 games after a crushing 26-20 overtime loss at SMU.

CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell took to social media after the game to comment on Miami’s diminished chances of making the College Football Playoff. Kanell believes this loss against unranked SMU was a death knell for the Hurricanes’ CFP hopes.

Miami led 20-17 in the fourth quarter before allowing a field goal with 25 seconds left in regular. During overtime, Miami quarterback Carson Beck threw an interception and SMU sealed the win with a 1-yard touchdown run from T.J. Harden.

Miami now drops to 2-2 in ACC play. The Hurricanes are 3-0 against ranked opponents (No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 18 South Florida, No. 18 Florida State). However, both losses are against unranked teams.

Miami will aim to bounce back next weekend when they host Syracuse. Miami leads the all-time series 16-8 but Syracuse took last year’s meeting 42-38 in the regular season finale to eliminate the Hurricanes from reaching the ACC Championship Game.

Syracuse at Miami is slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).

No. 20 Texas will take on visiting No. 9 Vanderbilt this weekend in a key SEC showdown. Heading into the matchup, head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an update on the status of quarterback Arch Manning.

Manning went into concussion protocol after getting injured on the first play of overtime during Texas’ 45-38 victory at Mississippi State. Sarkisian said Manning is still in concussion protocol prior to the game vs. the Commodores.

Manning has passed for 1,795 yards, 15 touchdowns and 6 interceptions along with a 57.6 QBR in his first season as Texas’ starting quarterback.

Graduate transfer Matthew Caldwell came in during overtime for Manning. Sarkisian is confident that Caldwell will hold it down if he has to turn to him as the starting quarterback.

“He’s a guy that has been in a variety of systems,” Sarkisian said. “He has athleticism, throws a really good ball. What I liked about him on his visit, probably the biggest thing was his demeanor. It didn’t seem too big for him here.”

Texas vs. Vanderbilt is set for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff from Austin. The game will be televised on ABC. Texas won last season’s meeting 27-24 vs. Vanderbilt in Nashville.

LSU is now in the market for a new head coach after firing Brian Kelly over the weekend.

Ed Orgeron is emphatically throwing his hat into the ring for a reunion.

The 64-year-old Orgeron was LSU’s head coach from 2016 to 2021 and guided the program to its first national title since 2007. During an interview on ESPN radio on Wednesday, the Louisiana native said he’d absolutely be open to a reunion if LSU called.

“I’d love to. Are you kidding me? Hey, I’m one phone call away,” Orgeron said when asked if he’d want his old job back. “I just gotta get in my truck; I could be there today.”

However, Orgeron also expressed that he’s open to returning to LSU as an assistant if the Tigers went a different direction at head coach, like Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Orgeron previously worked alongside Kiffin at USC.

“Yeah, I’d consider it. I love LSU. I still got my home in Baton Rouge. I loved when I was coaching for Coach (Les) Miles, being the defensive line coach,” Orgeron said. “I love the Tigers, and if I’m getting back into coaching, for sure I’d consider it. No doubt.”

Orgeron was named the AP Head Coach of the Year during the 2019 national title campaign. Orgeron was also the head coach at Ole Miss. His overall coaching record is 67-47 with a 4-1 mark in bowl games.

He has been out of coaching since leaving LSU in 2021, but has said on several occasions this year that he is interested in returning, regardless of the capacity.

No. 4 Alabama is now on a 7-game winning streak after falling in its season opener at Florida State. The Crimson Tide have bounced back to become a viable contender for the SEC crown and advance to the College Football Playoff.

This has the potential to be a special season for head coach Kalen DeBoer as he aims to make his mark on the program. However, he’s keeping Alabama levelheaded down the stretch run of the regular season.

During an appearance on The Triple Option podcast this week, DeBoer addressed the growing belief in the college football world that Alabama is back and how he’s handling it internally.

“I don’t think until it’s all said and done, I’m not gonna let our guys think that we’re back. I want us to have that edge that we had starting with that [Florida State] game, or after that game. You’ve got to find those different motivating factors,” DeBoer said. “It’s got to be internal, it’s got to be doing it for other people — not letting down your teammates in particular that are counting on you.”

DeBoer explains that being targeted is a major source of motivation for Alabama.

“What are those motivating factors? One of them that you just add to your list is everyone doubting you, the world being against you. I know a lot of programs probably say it, but we certainly know that everyone wants to take down ’Bama,” DeBoer said. “We use that as our edge.”

DeBoer added that he’s confident in the mental fortitude of the Crimson Tide to rise to the occasion whenever necessary.

“When people then start doubting whether you can do it,  I feel like we’ve got a group that’s got enough confidence and I can be real enough with them to where when I just tell them, this is what we’re up against, this is the team that we’re playing or this is what people are saying,” DeBoer said.

Overall, DeBoer is more focused on Alabama’s self-improvement rather than external factors.

“We don’t want to be thinking about the noise unless it can help benefit us and use it as motivating factors to take us to the next level,” DeBoer said. “I think our guys have done an awesome job of that.”

Next up for Alabama after a bye week is a home matchup vs. LSU on Nov. 8 (7:30 p.m. ET/ABC).

Joel Klatt gives his updated Playoff field entering November https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/joel-klatt-gives-his-updated-playoff-field-entering-november/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 17:41:25 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=519981 The Fox Sports analyst is getting out in front of the initial CFP rankings with his own bracket going into Week 10.

The race for the College Football Playoff is heating up as we approach Week 10. The first CFP bracket will be unveiled on Nov. 4, but FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt is already taking a crack at predicting it.

The former Colorado quarterback provided his updated CFP field on Wednesday. Klatt has Ohio State as the top seed, followed by (in order): Texas A&M, Indiana, Alabama, Miami, Georgia, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Oregon, Notre Dame and South Florida.

That hypothetical field would yield some wild first-round matchups. Miami would play South Florida in a rematch of a game the Canes won 49-12 earlier this year. Ole Miss would face Tennessee in a battle between SEC squads. Georgia would face Notre Dame in a rematch of last year’s CFP quarterfinal game. Texas Tech would meet Oregon.

Ohio State, Texas A&M, Indiana, and Alabama would earn first-round byes.

Ohio State is the defending CFP national champion and will aim to join Georgia as the second team to win back-to-back titles in the 2020s. Texas A&M has never qualified for the CFP but has favorable odds to make the Playoff this season. Indiana made its first trip to the CFP last season before falling to Notre Dame in the first round. Alabama has the most CFP appearances of any team (8), but the Tide are looking to make it for the first time without Nick Saban.

This season’s national title game will be held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Jan. 19.

Joel Klatt questions Texas over Iowa in the latest AP poll https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/joel-klatt-questions-texas-over-iowa-in-the-latest-ap-poll/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 16:53:46 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=519966 Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt explains why he believes the Longhorns are overrated, comparing them to the unranked Hawkeyes.

Texas is riding a 3-game winning streak and is currently ranked No. 20 in the AP poll. However, FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt believes an unranked Big Ten team is just as good.

During Tuesday’s edition of The Joel Klatt Show, the analyst made a case for Iowa, which also has a 6-2 record. Klatt suggests that preseason hype is playing a role in why the Longhorns are ranked and the Hawkeyes are not.

“I think it has to do with where you start and where you’re at now. Texas was the No. 1 team in the country. We thought that they were going to be incredible,” Klatt said.

Klatt is impressed with Iowa’s body of work, which includes a 41-3 victory vs. Minnesota last weekend.

“Iowa started as the 44th-ranked team in the country if you look at all the teams receiving votes…They just thumped Minnesota. That’s a good football team,” Klatt said. “They were just tied in the fourth quarter with Indiana, who we think is the No. 2 team in the country, and everybody else does too…Their other loss was on a last-second field goal at Iowa State in a rivalry game on the road.”

On the other hand, Klatt views Texas as being overrated because of a lack of quality victories.

“Meanwhile, Texas, they’re 6-2. They beat Kentucky and they beat Mississippi State, 2 bottom-tier teams. Close wins, overtime,” Klatt said. “Their losses are Ohio State and Florida, and candidly not particularly close.”

Texas will get a big chance to make a statement on Saturday against visiting No. 9 Vanderbilt (12 p.m. ET/ABC). Iowa will look to further add to its case with a huge home matchup vs. No. 6 Oregon on Nov. 8.

Auburn finally earned an SEC victory this season and it was in large part because of the defense, especially sophomore linebacker Xavier Atkins. After his efforts in Auburn‘s 33-24 victory at Arkansas, Atkins was recognized as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.

The 6-foot Atkins wreaked havoc on the Razorbacks, racking up 13 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Atkins has tallied at least 10 tackles in 3 of the last 4 games. He was excellent 2 weeks ago in the 23-17 double overtime loss to Missouri as well. In that game, Atkins recorded 11 tackles and 2 sacks. Overall this season, Atkins has produced 45 solo tackles, 7 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an interception.

Atkins transferred to Auburn after spending his freshman season at LSU. In his lone year at LSU, Atkins saw limited time and had 3 tackles. The Texas native was regarded by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 42 linebacker coming out of high school.

Next up for Auburn is a home contest vs. Kentucky on Nov. 1 as the Tigers aim to go above. 500 for the first time since Week 3. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network).

This season’s edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party between Florida and No. 5 Georgia is set for Nov. 1 from EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.

ESPN’s FPI has a prediction for the outcome of the SEC rivalry showdown. FPI is giving Georgia a 79.7 percent chance of defeating Florida. That’s a large number for a rivalry matchup but it speaks to the uncertainty surrounding Florida for the rest of the season.

Georgia will be well-rested after coming off a bye week. In their last game, the Bulldogs beat Ole Miss 43-35 on Oct. 18. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 26 of his 31 passes for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Florida also had a bye last weekend after getting rid of head coach Billy Napier. The Gators bounced back from a 34-17 loss at Texas A&M with a 23-21 victory against Mississippi State on Oct. 18, the final game Napier coached. Billy Gonzales, who was Florida’s wide receivers coach, is now the interim head coach.

Georgia leads the all-time series 56-44-2 along with a 4-game winning streak against Florida. In last season’s matchup, Georgia defeated Florida 34-20. Florida’s last victory vs. Georgia was a 44-28 win on Nov. 7, 2020.

Florida vs. Georgia will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ABC.
