Georgia and Texas squared off on Saturday night in a rematch of last season’s SEC Championship game. The Bulldogs won both matchups last season, and were once again in control against Texas in Athens when Kirby Smart decided to take a big risk.

The Bulldogs went on a 10-play, 73-yard drive at the end of the third quarter that Gunner Stockton connected with London Humphreys on a 30-yard touchdown to take a 21-10 lead. However, it was the ensuing kickoff where Smart showed how unpredictable he can be.

Kicker Peyton Woodring delivered a perfect onside kick, which Georgia recovered.

Getting the onside kick was one thing, but the Bulldogs once again executed a perfect drive, and capped it off with another Stockton touchdown pass. This time, he found tight end Lawson Luckie for a six-yard pass to take the commanding 28-10 lead.

With Alabama losing on Saturday to Oklahoma, the door has been opened once again for the Bulldogs to make it to the SEC Championship game.

The Bulldogs finish with two consecutive non-conference games. Next week they take on Charlotte before the regular season-finale against Georgia Tech that is emerging as one of the biggest matchups in the rivalry in a long time.

Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy has become one of the best running backs in all of college football, and he once again showcased that on Saturday night against the Florida Gators.

For the first time in his career, Lacy went over the 200-yard mark, and was able to get into the endzone three times.

With the Rebels trailing 24-20 to start the fourth quarter, Lacy scored arguably the easiest touchdown of his career. This was his second touchdown of the night, which gave Ole Miss the lead:

https://twitter.com/OleMissFB/status/1989889692179853642

Lacy entered Saturday with 912 rushing yards, which was second in the SEC behind only Ahmad Hardy of Missouri. The sophomore played his freshman season in Columbia last year for the Tigers, where he rushed for 104 yards.

Much of the talk in Oxford has been about where Lane Kiffin is going to be coaching next season. However, the Rebels are looking to complete their incredible regular season with a trip to potentially the SEC Championship game as well as the College Football Playoff.

The Rebels have only one regular season game remaining, and that is against in-state rival Mississippi State in the annual Egg Bowl on Nov. 28.

Kalen DeBoer and Alabama lost to Oklahoma 23-21 on Saturday, despite out-gaining the Sooners 406 to 212 in total yards. One of the biggest reasons why was the fact that Crimson Tide turned the ball over three times.

Quarterback Ty Simpson threw an interception that Eli Bowen took back for an 87-yard pick-6 to give the Sooners a 10-0 lead early in the game. He later fumbled on a strip sack, continuing a concerning trend.

The fumble for Simpson was the fifth consecutive game that he has fumbled the ball. DeBoer commented on that issue after the game.

“With the pressure they brought, he’s got to get rid of it, and be OK throwing it away,” DeBoer said after the game. “I know it’s third down and he wants to stay on the field, but the defense is playing good too, and you’ve got to live with a punt once in awhile.”

Simpson has been spectacular the entire season for the Crimson Tide, and is a huge reason why the team is in the race for both the SEC Championship, as well as a spot in the College Football Playoff.

On the season, he has thrown for 2,787 yards, 22 touchdowns and only two interceptions. The Crimson Tide will be back in action against Eastern Illinois next Saturday, and Simpson will look to avoid fumbling the ball.

There was a bit of controversy late in the first half between Ole Miss and Florida on Saturday night.

The Rebels kicked a field goal to cut the deficit to 21-20 shortly near the end of the second quarter. On the kick, Florida was called for a hands-to-the-face penalty. The officials said the penalty occurred after the kick, so the penalty was enforced on the kickoff.

However, according to ESPN rules analyst Jerry McGinn, that was not the correct call, as he said the Rebels should have been given a new set of downs.

“The play does not stop until the ball hits the net,” McGinn said. “And the ball has not hit the net yet when the foul occurred. So this should have been a live-ball foul, which would have given Ole Miss a first down.”

If the officials would have given the Rebels a new set of downs, they would have been in a goal-to-go situation where they could have retaken the lead with a touchdown. Ole Miss could have also run the clock down further. Instead, Florida held on to the lead and ultimately tacked on another field goal before the half.

At the break, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin expressed his frustration with the officials’ decision.

The Rebels entered Saturday night in complete control of their own destiny in terms of making it to the College Football Playoff.

Alabama suffered its second loss of the year, as the Crimson Tide lost 23-21 to the Oklahoma Sooners. The loss was the first for Alabama at home since Kalen DeBoer took over as the coach.

As big of loss as it was for the Alabama Crimson Tide, it was an even bigger win for the Sooners as they remained in the race for a spot in the College Football Playoff. After the game, a few Sooners players wanted to celebrate at the 50-yard line, but they were unable to after being stopped by a Crimson Tide staffer.

College football has seen some end of game scuffles over the last few seasons, with many of those instances happening at midfield. Just last season, Michigan planted a flag at Ohio State after last season’s game that caused a scuffle between the 2 teams.

Despite the loss, the Crimson Tide are still in.a solid spot to make it to the College Football Playoff as well as the SEC Championship Game. For the Sooners, just 2 weeks ago they looked like they would not be making it to the CFP, but have won back-to-back road SEC games against ranked teams after they beat Tennessee last week.

Alabama will take on Eastern Illinois next Saturday, while the Sooners will host Mizzou.

Alabama had never lost at home during the Kalen DeBoer era, but that streak came to an end on Saturday as the Crimson Tide fell to Oklahoma 23-21 in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide entered the game having won eight in a row since the season-opening loss, but turnovers really hurt Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide turned the ball over three times, with the Sooners getting 17 points off those turnovers.

When Alabama loses, the fans let their opinions be known on social media, and it was DeBoer who was on the receiving end of that on Saturday night.

While the Crimson Tide fans are obviously angry on Saturday night, not all is lost for the team. Despite the defeat, Alabama is still in good shape to make it to the College Football Playoff, as well as the SEC Championship game.

However, the Crimson Tide have lost the margin of error the they earned throughout the season and will have to take care of business at Auburn in the Iron Bowl to end the season.

Before that though, the Crimson Tide will be home against Eastern Illinois next Saturday.

Kenny Dillingham has done a terrific job since he became the head coach in 2023 at Arizona State. Last season, he led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship as well as a berth in the College Football Playoff.

The Sun Devils have had to deal with many injuries this year, but the team moved to 7-3 on the season with a 25-23 victory against West Virginia on Saturday.

Dillingham has heard the rumors that he may be interested in leaving Tempe and taking a different job, and he made an emphatic statement on what his future plans are.

“I was never leaving,”Dillingham said after the game. “I never said I was leaving. This is home.”

One school that Dillingham has had his name linked to is Auburn, as he was the offensive coordinator there in 2019.

In his first year, the Sun Devils finished 3-9 and were at the bottom of the Pac-12 in the conference’s final year.

However, they have had a smooth transition to the Big 12. With the win on Saturday, the Sun Devils are in a 3-team tie for 3rd place in the conference, trailing only Texas Tech and BYU. While they are on the outside looking in, the Sun Devils still have an outside shot of making it to the Big 12 Championship Game if they can close out the regular season with wins at Colorado and against Arizona.

Former Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. Robinson started his NFL career in Washington, as the Commanders took him with the 98th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In each of his three seasons in Washington, he rushed for at least 733 yards, and finished with 15 rushing touchdowns.

He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers this off-season, and has rushed for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a complementary role of Christian McCaffrey.

In today’s college football, players are much more willing to transfer instead of having to sit for a couple years. However, Robinson said the fact that he had to do just that at Alabama helped him be able to handle what the NFL was all about.

“I came from a program in college where you have to wait your turn,” Robinson told reporters. “You don’t come in and start, even if you have the talent and ability…it’s rare to start Day 1,” Robinson Jr said, “It’s taught me to be patient, continue to stay down and work. When my time comes, I gotta be ready for it.”

He spent his college days in Tuscaloosa, where he won a national championship in both 2017 and 2020. He had to wait his time behind some other great running backs, but he got his time to shine in 2021 when he rushed for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Being McCaffrey’s back-up can be a tough job, as he is one of the rare running backs in today’s NFL that is on the field for nearly every play. However, that experience in Tuscaloosa prepared him for this exact situation.

Ryan Williams and the Alabama Crimson Tide are looking like a team that can win the College Football Playoff as they are now 8-1 on the season after defeating LSU, 20-9, in Week 11.

The Crimson Tide are in complete control of making it to the SEC Championship, as they join the Texas A&M Aggies as the only two teams without a conference loss.

Before that win against the Tigers, the team was talked to by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who just helped the Dodgers win a second consecutive World Series. Being able to hear from a legendary coach like Roberts is something Williams won’t forget.

“It caught us by surprise … I think some of the guys didn’t know who he was until he started speaking, and it was almost like a Nick Saban moment,” Williams said. “People started snapping and it was like, OK, we need to listen.”

The expectations when it comes to playing at Alabama is that the team is competing for a national championship every year. No one understands that better than Roberts, as the Dodgers are in the middle of a dynasty. Williams said there are similarities to the Dodgers run for Alabama, and Roberts laid that out to the team.

“He just gave us some words of encouragement and advice — that we’re basically in the same position that the [Dodgers] are in, and we’re always gonna get everyone’s best,” Williams said. “Just to focus on the game because the game will honor you. Staying humble, staying grounded and continuing to focus on being in the moment.”

Roberts and Kalen DeBoer became friends a couple of years ago when DeBoer was able to spend some time around him. They continued to talk and DeBoer saw the team in action against Milwaukee, and Roberts returned the favor by meeting with DeBoer’s team.

Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels will look to continue their pursuit to the SEC Championship and the College Football Playoff when they take on the Florida Gators on Saturday.

Florida enters this game with some quarterback controversy, as DJ Lagway was pulled from the game during the loss to Kentucky.

Kiffin was asked on Wednesday what he has seen different from Lagway this season, and the coach talked about Lagway’s performance in the matchup last year.

“I don’t know that I’ve seen growth,” Lane Kiffin said. “I do know this, I watched the guy beat us last year and play great and have one of the highest yards per completion of any player in the country last year. I know the guy can play as well as anyone in the country at times and we gotta make sure that’s not against us Saturday night.”

In the game last year, Lagway threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-17 UF victory. When he was pulled last week against Kentucky, the Gators went with freshman quarterback Tramell Jones Jr.

Kiffin has heard his name linked to the Florida job, and it only made sense that he was going to be asked about the guy who figures to be the quarterback next season. Kickoff between these two teams is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN

Paul Finebaum has heard all kinds of rumblings of where coaches are going to end up this offseason. Some of the best jobs in the country are open in LSU, Penn State, Florida and Auburn among many others.

According to Finebaum, one coach to keep an eye on is Lincoln Riley, as he said he has heard some rumors about him leaving USC this offseason.

“One other name Matt, and I have been critical of this guy, but he has done a really good job this year of keeping his program together and that is Lincoln Riley,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show. “I’m not just say this to say it. I keep hearing whispers that he could be in play. It is good for him that his name is back in the picture again. He is still one of those names you could announce at a press conference and people would go ‘Oh wow’.”

Riley has USC on the outside looking in at the College Football Playoff race, as the Trojans are currently 7-2. However, they have games against Iowa and Oregon the next two weeks, which could go a long way in helping them make a run to the CFP.

There are going to be a lot of names thrown out the next few weeks for coaching jobs. However, if Riley is a legitimate candidate for available coaching jobs, then it could be an even-wilder offseason.

Former Alabama player Daron Payne and the Washington Commanders have had a frustrating season, and that continued on Sunday as they lost to the Detroit Lions by a score of 44-22.

For Payne, those frustrations boiled over during the game, as he threw a punch at Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The officials saw it and they ejected him from the game.

Here’s a clip:

Ejection may not be the only punishment that Payne receives, as the NFL will surely take a look at this. The league has put an emphasis on taunting and unsportsmanlike penalties, and this type of play could easily turn into a suspension for Payne.

Payne has been in Washington since being drafted No. 13 in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Alabama. His best season came in 2022 when he had 64 tackles and 11.5 sacks.

It has been a frustrating year in Washington to say the least. Last season, the Commanders were one of the best stories in the NFL. Jayden Daniels had a spectacular rookie season, and he led the team to the NFC Championship game.

This year, he has had to deal with a ton of injuries and the team is now 3-7 on the year and would likely have to run the table to make it to the playoffs. While being frustrated is understandable, this is a moment that Payne will wish he made a different decision.

Paul Finebaum is going to be busy the next couple of months talking about the coaching carousel that is in the SEC. Arkansas, Florida, LSU and Auburn will all be hiring coaches in the offseason.

The Tigers may be the first team to hire a coach, as Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has emerged as the betting favorite to be the next Auburn job. If that does happen, Finebaum believes that Auburn fans would be estatic with that decision.

“The betting favorite at Auburn is Jon Sumrall,” Finebaum said on the Matt Barrie Show. “It’s not the hire that wows America. If that ends up being the case, and Matt, we are speculating. I think almost every Auburn fan that I talked to would be thrilled. That job is so much better than I think it is being given credit for.”

Sumrall is the current favorite to land the Auburn job, according to the latest market odds on Kalshi.

Sumrall is trying to lead the Green Wave to a College Football Playoff berth, and they saw their chances increase in a big way after pulling an upset against Memphis.

Auburn let go of Hugh Freeze after the loss to Kentucky, and DJ Durkin has filled in as the interim coach. The Tigers battled Vanderbilt on Saturday, but they ended up losing 45-38 in overtime.

Greg McElroy knows when the college football season hits November is when there starts to be some separation in terms of teams, as well as players in the award races.

During a segment on his ‘Always College Football’ podcast, McElroy talked about the Heisman Trophy race and how it is starting to narrow. McElroy sees Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin at the top of the race.

“Fernando Mendoza has now taken the lead at +160 to take home the coveted individual award in all of sports,” McElroy said. “What he just did on the road in Happy Valley is something they will be talking about forever. Julian Sayin is sitting there at +185 and he is continuing to play at a really high level. I think he has the best chance of probably winning because of the platform he is playing on.”

Medonza, Sayin, Ty Simpson and Marcel Reed are all legitimate candidates, and they are all also the starting quarterbacks for the top 4 teams in the country. There could be matchups of Mendoza and Sayin competing for a B1G Championship, as well as Reed and Simpson competing for an SEC title.

Finalists for the Heisman Trophy will be announced on Monday, Dec. 8.

Greg McElroy shares takeaway from Alabama’s defense after big showing vs. LSU https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/greg-mcelroy-shares-takeaway-from-alabamas-defense-after-big-showing-vs-lsu/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 00:14:06 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=523928 Alabama didn't start the season playing great defense, but Greg McElroy is seeing significant improvement from that unit.

Greg McElroy saw early in the year that Alabama‘s offense was going to be good enough to compete for both an SEC Championship as well as a spot in the College Football Playoff. However, there were some question marks about the defense, especially after the 31-17 loss to Florida State in the season-opener.

The defense has improved throughout the year, though, and was especially dominant in the 20-9 victory against LSU on Saturday.

During an episode of ‘Always College Football’ on Sunday, McElroy had high praise for the Crimson Tide’s defense.

“Alabama’s defense is start to reach their potential,” McElroy said. “If you look at this defense, it is just a play-making group. They just make plays. They forced three fumbles in the game against LSU. They now have 16 takeaways on the season, which is one of the highest rates in the country. If you look at this defense, they are always punching the ball out. It is everybody. They are all swarming to the ball. Kane Wommack the defensive coordinator is doing an outstanding job.”

Since that loss to Florida State in Week 1, the Crimson Tide haven’t allowed a team to score more than 24 points. Yhonzae Pierre is putting together an outstanding sophomore season. On the season, he has 31 tackles, six sacks and three forced fumbles. In the win against the Tigers, he had two sacks and a forced fumble.

With Ty Simpson leading the offense, the Crimson Tide have the type of offense that can put up a ton of points. Having a defense as opportunistic as the Crimson Tide’s make them a very tough team to beat the rest of the year.

Up next is a game against an Oklahoma team that is fighting for a spot in the CFP.

https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1987635577257370033

The ACC is in full chaos right now, as the two highest ranked conference teams in the College Football Playoff rankings both lost on Saturday. The Virginia Cavaliers lost at home to Wake Forest, while Louisville lost an overtime thriller to California.

When the CFP rankings come out on Tuesday, Pittsburgh could find itself in the top 20. The Panthers started off the season at 2-2, but have rattled off five consecutive wins. The lone loss in ACC play was to Louisville in the conference opener. For the Panthers, their route to a CFP berth is to win the ACC Championship game. However, the game against the Fighting Irish allows the team to show what it is made of against a top team in the country.

The Fighting Irish started the year 0-2, but have won seven consecutive games. They were ranked No. 10 in the CFP rankings last week, and appear to be in complete control of their own destiny if they keep winning.

Kickoff is early at 12 p.m. ET, and the game will be on ABC.

CJ Gardner-Johnson has accomplished many things throughout his NFL career, and has made big plays for many teams. He is now a member of the Chicago Bears, and delivered a big performance in the team’s 24-20 comeback victory against the New York Giants.

He finished the game with two sacks, and was given a game-ball by Bears coach Ben Johnson for his performance on Sunday.

“He’s always been a phenomenal football player,” Johnson said after the game. “I think he’s found a home here.”

Not only did he have two sacks, but he also had nine tackles as the Bears scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes to get the win.

Gardner-Johnson was just signed by the Bears on October 29 in a move that reunited him with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. He has played with the Saints, Eagles, Lions, Texans and now the Bears, and he has 325 tackles and 18 interceptions in his career.

He played 2016-2018 at Florida, where he finished with 161 tackles, nine interceptions and four sacks before being selected by the Saints with the No. 105 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

At 6-3, the Bears are right there in the thick of things in both the NFC as well as the NFC North.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were well on their way to a win against the Houston Texans that would have moved the team to 6-3 on the season. They were up 29-10 in the fourth against a Texans team that was without star quarterback C.J. Stroud, who was out with a concussion from Week 9.

However, chaos ensued and the Texans took a 30-29 lead late in the fourth quarter. With the Jaguars trying to get a desperation Hail Mary, Trevor Lawrence was hit by former Alabama star Will Anderson Jr., and fumbled a ball that Texans defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins took it back for a touchdown as time expired.

This made the final score 36-29 Texans, and bettors who had the Jaguars at +1.5 were left in agony.

Parker Washington had a big game for the Jaguars. First, he scored on a 7-yard pass to give the Jaguars a 10-0 lead early. Then early in the second quarter, he took back a punt 73 yards to put the team up 17 points.

The Jaguars entered the day as the last team currently in the AFC playoff field, but missed a huge opportunity to create a little separation. In Week 11, they host the Los Angeles Chargers in a game with huge AFC playoff standings.

Emotions can be high during a college football game, and that was clear on Saturday as Bethune-Cookman took on Grambling State. It started as the teams were coming out for the second half of the game that Grambling State won, 31-23.

Here’s a look at the scene:

Grambling State coach Mickey Joseph talked to reporters after the game, saying that a few players from Bethune-Cookman were coming out slow from the locker room as his team was trying to run on the field.

“You gotta make sure as a coach, support staff that all your players come down,” Joseph said. “If you’re gonna walk down there and take your time. Now, there’s 3:30 left on the clock and you got four or five of their kids just taking their time. We gotta go. We can’t wait on two players, but they should never leave their players. Who leaves their players? Who leaves their players over there knowing we got to come down. We aren’t going to tolerate the disrespect.”

It was an explosive start for both teams, as Grambling had a 24-20 lead at the half. However, after the brawl occurred, all the fireworks ended, as there were only 10 points in the second half. Quarterback Hayden Benoit had a monster game, as the freshman threw for 220 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Grambling dominated on the line of scrimmage, as the Tigers rushed for 197 yards on offense. On defense, they held the Wildcats to only 26 yards on 29 carries. With the win, the Tigers moved to 6-3 on the season.

DJ Lagway has had his issues with interceptions throughout the season, with his worst game being against LSU when he threw five interceptions. He was on that kind of pace on Saturday night against Kentucky, when he threw three interceptions in the first half.

Florida fans were calling for Lagway to be benched, and Gators interim coach Billy Gonzales decided to make the move to backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr.

Lagway on the season has now thrown 12 interceptions on the season, compared to only 11 touchdowns. It has been an up-and-down season for Lagway.

Jones played in the season-opener against LIU, as he was 12-of-18 for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

The Gators are trying to earn a bowl berth, but the schedule is not doing them any favors. Their next two games are at Ole Miss, and then at home against the Tennessee Volunteers before the season-finale against Florida State.

There is going to be a new coach in Gainesville next year, and could there be a new quarterback as well?

Jeremiyah Love is one of the very best running backs in all of college football. He has shown big time play-making ability out of the backfield. Just last week against Boston College, he scored on a 94-yard run to help the Fighting Irish pull away for the win.

He added an even more impressive score on Saturday night against Navy, as he broke a tackle and was able to roll over and run away for an improbable 48-yard touchdown against Midshipmen.

Love entered the game with 894 yards on the season, which ranked sixth in the country. Jadarian Price adds another 521 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground, and the duo combine to give the Fighting Irish the best 1-2 punch in the country.

Despite starting the season 0-2, the Fighting Irish are in very good shape when it came to the first release of the College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame is currently No. 10 in the rankings, and are set up to make it to the CFP as long as they finish out the season strong.

If Love and the Fighting Irish both continue to win games, then a trip to New York could be in store for Love.

Florida last week was able to give Georgia all it wanted before losing 24-20 in an extremely competitive game. Quarterback DJ Lagway has struggled with interceptions this season, and did so again in the first half against the Wildcats with 3 more interceptions.

Florida fans are frustrated with the season as a whole, but Lagway’s struggles have them calling for him to be benched.

Lagway entered the season with huge expectations, but has really struggled to limit turnovers. During the loss to LSU earlier in the season, Lagway through 5 interceptions. On the season, he has thrown 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

If it was up to Florida fans, the Gators would bench Lagway and go with freshman Tramell Jones Jr. On the season, the freshman is 12-of-18 for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the Gators 55-0 season-opening win against LIU.

Daymion Sanford and the Texas A&M Aggies remained undefeated on the season Saturday, as they took care of Missouri by a score of 38-17.

With the win, the Aggies move to 9-0 on the year. They were already No. 3 in the first rankings release for the College Football Playoff.

The Aggies were behind two B1G programs, as Indiana was No. 2 with defending national champion Ohio State at No. 1. After the rankings release, CFP selection committee chairman and current Baylor athletic Mack Rhoades said A&M’s defense was why those two teams were ranked ahead of Texas A&M.

Sanford and his teammates heard the comments, and they used them a motivation on Saturday.

“It motivated us a lot. Coming into the game we had a chip on our shoulder,” Sanford said after the game. “Why are they disrespecting us?”

Right now, all that Mike Elko and the Aggies need to be concerned about is getting wins. They are in complete control of making it to the SEC Championship Game, as well as making it to the CFP.

Wisconsin football has had a tough 2025 season thus far, but the Badgers picked up a huge victory as they upset No. 23 Washington 13-10 at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday night.

The Badgers trailed 10-3 at the half to the Huskies, but a two-yard touchdown run by Carter Smith tied the game up in the third quarter. Then a Nathanial Vakos 32-yard field goal gave the Badgers the 13-10 lead that proved to be the decisive score in this game.

The weather was built for Wisconsin football, as it was pouring rain. However, that didn’t stop the Badgers’ fans from storming the field to celebrate the big victory.

The Badgers won their first two games of the season, but entered Saturday on a six-game losing streak. Not only were they losing those games, but they were getting blown out during that span. None of the six losses were by less than 14 points, with three of them being by 24 or more points.

Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies remained undefeated on Saturday as they knocked off the Missouri Tigers, 38-17 in Columbia.

The Aggies moved a step closer to clinching a spot in the SEC Championship Game, as well as a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Elko understands there is a ton left to play for, and he isn’t backing down from any of the lofty expectations. He’s also determined to not let Texas A&M slip up like it did a year ago.

“I think they’re a mature group,” Elko said after the win. “I think they know what they want, and we got great leadership. We got great players out here and we are going to go finish things the right way,”

Last season, Texas A&M was 7-1 with a chance to make the CFP. However, the Aggies lost three of their final four games to end the season at 8-4.

The Aggies were off last week after winning 49-25 in Death Valley two weeks ago, and the team didn’t skip a beat on Saturday in Columbia. On Wednesday, Auburn announced that it would be playing Notre Dame in 2027 on the road, while the Fighting Irish would be making the return trip the following season.

Despite both of these programs being extremely successful throughout the years, the matchup in South Bend in 2027 will be the first ever matchup between the two schools. Auburn has been ramping up its non-conference season the past couple of years, as the Tigers will be doing a series with Miami in 2029 and 2030.

Joel Klatt was tuned in to the first College Football Rankings release like every college football fan was on Tuesday night. There weren’t a ton of complaints going on, as Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M were the top 3 teams.

There was some controversy with how high Notre Dame was, as the Fighting Irish have two losses and were coming off a less-than-dominating performance against Boston College.

However, one glaring thing that Klatt saw from the rankings was that the selection committee is not high on the ACC. He went as far to say the committee ‘hates’ the conference.

“I know what I said I was going to say, I think the committee hates the ACC,” Klatt said on his Wednesday show. “They’re not getting two bids. These teams are not getting propped up over the teams ahead of them. Here are the ACC teams in the Top 25. There is almost no way they are getting a team all the way up to be champion, and a second team in a position to go to that game, to lose and still go to the playoff. I just don’t see it at all.”

Virginia is currently the highest-ranked team at No. 14, with No. 15 Louisville right behind them. Georgia Tech and Miami come in at No. 17 and No. 18, and Pittsburgh is the other ranked team at No. 24.

The Hurricanes were in prime position to make a run just a couple of weeks ago, but they have lost two straight games. Last year, Clemson defeated SMU in an incredible ACC Conference Championship, and both teams still made it to the CFP.

With so many teams bunched up in the rankings, the ACC promises to be extremely exciting over the last month. But it looks like the winner of the conference championship game may be the lone CFP team from the conference this year.

Ashton Daniels will make his second straight start on Saturday when Auburn faces No. 16 Vanderbilt on the road.

During the SEC coaches teleconference call on Wednesday, interim head coach DJ Durkin announced that Auburn would be sticking with Daniels going forward. Daniels started last week’s game against Kentucky, taking over for Jackson Arnold.

“We’ve made the decision that Ashton Daniels will be our starting quarterback,” Durkin said, per AuburnSports‘ Justin Hokanson. “I think he gives us the best opportunity to win the game. Our coaches, our team is 100% behind him. He’s done a good job preparing this week, so he’ll be the guy we go with, and we have a good plan for him.”

Last week against Kentucky, Daniels had a very difficult game. He went 13-of-28 for 104 yards and one interception through the air. He was running for his life all game, and he was sacked 5 times.

In his 2 prior seasons, both at Stanford, Daniels threw for 3,947 yards with 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also ran for 669 yards and 3 scores as a junior during the 2024 campaign. He transferred to Auburn this offseason.

Struggles at the quarterback position have hurt the Tigers’ program for the last few seasons. That was a position that former head coach Hugh Freeze just couldn’t get right during his time.

Kickoff between the Tigers and Commodores is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday. The game will be on the SEC Network.

ESPN college football analyst Heather Dinich follows the College Football Playoff committee as much as any analyst in the sport. She understands what they are thinking, and can see where they could be going as the season continues to head on.

After the CFP rankings were announced on Tuesday night, Dinich believes there is a scenario where the SEC could potentially have 5 teams make the CFP.

“When you look at this bracket, you see the SEC in great shape with four teams at the top there that should be locks,” Dinich said on ‘Get Up’. “Don’t count out the opportunity of a fifth team sneaking into this. Texas and Oklahoma are right on the bubble.Texas has a chance to play Georgia, this thing could still get even wider in terms of the SEC’s participation.”

Currently, Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss are all in great shape to make it, while Texas and Oklahoma No. 11 and 12 in the rankings, seeds in the bracket that could go to conference champions from the American and ACC.

Both Texas and Oklahoma have some huge games remaining on the schedule that are going to determine if those teams make it or not. The Longhorns have matchups at Georgia and against Texas A&M remaining on the season, while Oklahoma still goes to Alabama and has home games against Missouri and LSU.

This was only the first week of the CFP rankings, and there is still another month to go. However, the fact that the SEC has so many teams in great position to make it is only going to rile fans up across the rest of the country.

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the season were unveiled on Tuesday. The top 3 teams were Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M, which is what many expected.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum thought the committee did a decent job with its first Top 25. He did have one concern, though. Texas A&M, he said, was too low.

“Texas A&M, in many ways, I think they probably have the best résumé in the country,” Finebaum said Wednesday morning on ESPN’s Get Up. “The metrics favor them. I get Ohio State, the eye test has been superb for them. I also understand Indiana has looked good in every game and they have that Oregon win.

“To me, what A&M has had to do is much more accomplished. They went to Notre Dame and beat a really good team there. To me, they should be No. 2. Sue me if you’re Indiana.”

As Finebaum noted, right now, these rankings don’t mean much. Indiana and Ohio State are on a collision course for a matchup in the Big Ten Championship game.

The Aggies also still have a tough game on the schedule at Texas, and a potential SEC Championship game. This weekend, they hit the road to take on a Missouri team that is currently ranked No. 22 in the CFP.

If A&M keeps winning, Finebaum’s main gripe with the initial CFP ranking will take care of itself.

Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri Tigers have a huge game on Saturday when they face No. 3 Texas A&M in Columbia. Last year the two teams played in College Station, and the Aggies won that game 41-10.

While the Aggies were a good team last season, Drinkwitz knows they are even better this year.

“That team last year whipped our butt,” Eli Drinkwitz said on the SEC teleconference. “They came out hungry and took it to us.

“Are they better? Yeah.”

The Aggies enter this game undefeated and are coming off a bye after beating LSU 49-25 two weeks ago. Marcel Reed’s development has played a big role in the Aggies being even better. He has thrown for 1,972 and 17 touchdowns, while also rushing for 349 yards and six more scores.

The defense is also a lot better this season, as Cashius Howell is making things very difficult for opposing quarterbacks with 9.5 sacks.

The Tigers will be starting freshman Matt Zollers at quarterback after Beau Pribula suffered an injury against Vanderbilt.

This is a big game for both teams. Missouri is No. 22 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and if the Tigers were able to run the table to end the year, they could sneak into the playoffs. The Aggies are in position for one of the first-round byes, as well as a spot in the SEC Championship game.

Under Rick Barnes, Tennessee basketball has become one of the most consistent programs in college basketball. The Volunteers have done a tremendous job of challenging themselves in the non-conference, as Barnes has shown that he will play anybody, anywhere.

On Wednesday, Barnes showed just that as the Volunteers announced that they will be doing a home-and-home series with Purdue. Next year’s game will be at the Mackey Arena, with the return game being in Knoxville in 2027.

There isn’t a ton of travel for the two teams, as Knoxville and West Lafayette are just over 400 miles away from each other. Despite the close proximity, the two schools have played only seven times, with Purdue winning five of the games.

The last time that the Volunteers and Boilermakers played was in the Elite Eight in 2024, with Purdue winning the game 72-65.

Both of the teams figure to be in contention for another Elite Eight appearance during this season. The Boilermakers are the preseason No. 1 team in college basketball, while the Volunteers are currently ranked 18th.

The Volunteers are 1-0 after beating Mercer 76-61 on Monday, while the Boilermakers won their season-opener against Evansville 82-51 on Tuesday night.

Cole Cubelic knows what Auburn football means to the state, as he played his college football there from 1996 to 2001. Like many of the Auburn fans, the news on Sunday that Hugh Freeze had been fired as the coach hit home to him.

As a former player, Cubelic knows what a mid-season coaching change can do to the players on the team, and he posted his reaction to the decision on social media.

“Coaching changes mid season offer positives for very few,” Cubelic posted on X. “Easy to understand the Auburn administration making this move based on performance & direction. The fans & supporters deserve better. Hate it for the players & assistants. Constant distractions upcoming for them over then next few weeks.”

Freeze was fired midway through his third season on the job. The Tigers went just 6-16 in SEC play under his direction. The final straw was a 10-3 loss at home to Kentucky on Saturday night, dragging the Tigers to just 1-5 in conference action this season.

The Auburn family will now await Freeze’s replacement. Auburn athletic director John Cohen is set to speak with reporters on Monday, as is interim head coach DJ Durkin. Auburn is expected to conduct a national search to find its next head coach.

Longtime college football analyst Paul Finebaum shared his thoughts on the Auburn coaching vacancy on Sunday after the Tigers parted ways with Hugh Freeze.

Finebaum said Auburn needs to be different in their approach to find a new coach, as he believes it’s about the right “fit” for the program rather than the name.

“This is not Florida or LSU,” Finebaum said in an appearance on WJOX. “Fit does matter more at Auburn than probably some places. You can’t just bring in a James Franklin and think that’s going to work. It won’t. I remember when Deion Sanders name was mentioned a couple years ago. I mean, I got looks from people like ‘are you serious? This person has to understand the Auburn family because that is ultimately who you are working for.”

The Tigers are currently 4-5 on the season, but are 1-5 in the SEC. While Finebaum doesn’t believe that Franklin makes any sense for the job at Auburn, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman has him as a potential “wild card” for the job.

This promises to be a wild off-season in all of college football, but especially in the SEC. There’s already 4 head coaching jobs open in the SEC with the potential for more before this coaching carousel comes to a close.

Former Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston made his NFL debut last week against the Carolina Panthers. However, it was his second career game on Sunday against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs where he made the first big play of his career.

Trailing 28-21, Mahomes and the Chiefs had a chance to drive down the field and tie the game. However, Hairston had other plans as he intercepted a deep Mahomes pass to help secure a win for the Bills.

Buffalo was able to run down the majority of the clock and then get one final defensive stand to clinch the victory over Kansas City.

Here’s a clip of Hairston’s interception:

Hairston was drafted by the Bills with the No. 30 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but suffered a non-contact injury during Bills rookie mini-camp on July 29. He was put on the injured reserve, but was able to come back and play last week against the Panthers.

During his time at Kentucky, Hairston showcased the ability to make the big-play, especially during the 2023 season. He had five interceptions that season, and he took two of them back for touchdowns.

]]>
James Franklin and Jimbo Fisher are two guys who have coached a lot of big-time football, and they are both looking to get back to a sideline in 2026.

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman said Sunday that Franklin and Fisher are both “wildcards” for the Auburn job, which is now open after the Tigers parted ways with Hugh Freeze on Sunday.

Here’s Feldman’s analysis on Franklin, who was fired by Penn State earlier this season but has been linked to the open Virginia Tech job:

Former Penn State coach James Franklin is a top target for the Virginia Tech vacancy, but Franklin might be more intrigued by this job. Before his 12 years in Happy Valley, he worked wonders in three seasons in the SEC at Vanderbilt. This year was a nightmare at Penn State, and he was fired after losing consecutive games against Oregon, a dismal UCLA team and then Northwestern at home, but Franklin knows how to win. He led the Nittany Lions to five AP top-10 finishes.

Franklin made it known during an appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay that he hopes to be back in coaching as soon as next season.

As for Fisher, he has ties with Auburn as he was the quarterbacks coach there for six years, and he also played his college football in the state of Alabama at Samford.

Here’s what Feldman says about Fisher’s potential candidacy at Auburn:

The other intriguing option is former Texas A&M and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, who is now doing TV work for the ACC Network. He took the Seminoles to a national title following the 2013 season and led the Aggies to a No. 4 finish in 2020. He did get paid a boatload of money to leave College Station in 2023 after things really fizzled out there, but his 45-25 record was a lot better than anything the Tigers have been doing of late. It’s worth noting things also fell apart for him in Tallahassee late in his tenure. The 60-year-old played college football in-state at Samford, where he also started his coaching career, and he spent six seasons at Auburn as quarterbacks coach. If Fisher really wants back into coaching and Auburn is game, this might be very tempting for him.

Fisher has previously stated a desire to return to coaching.

Shane Beamer made a big decision on Sunday, as he opted to fire offensive coordinator Mike Shula on Sunday. The decision came after South Carolina‘s 30-14 loss to Ole Miss in Week 10.

The offense hasn’t lived up to the expectations that it had at the beginning of the year with quarterback LaNorris Sellers leading the way. While he said it was the correct decision at the time of hiring, Beamer said it just hadn’t worked out.

“Gotta be better… that’s why I made the change,” Beamer said on a teleconference on Sunday night. “I believed it was the right decision last December and frankly, it hasn’t worked.”

The offense has been inconsistent all year, but it has been especially bad the last month. The Gamecocks are on a four-game losing streak, and the most points they have scored during that streak was 22 against Alabama. In the other three games, they scored 10, 7 and 14.

South Carolina is idle in Week 11, which may have played a factor in the timing of this decision. This allows Beamer and his staff to get on the same page and come up with a plan. The schedule doesn’t get any easier at all, as the Gamecocks hit the road in two weeks to College Station to take on No. 3 Texas A&M.

Hugh Freeze was fired on Sunday after Auburn had a shocking loss at home on Saturday night against Kentucky.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 4-5 on the season and 1-5 in SEC play.

On Sunday night, Freeze released a statement reflecting on his time as Auburn’s head coach.

“As I reflect on my time here at Auburn, I’m filled with gratitude and humility,” Freeze said in-part. “Serving as the head football coach at this incredible university has been one of the greatest honors of my career. From the moment I arrived on The Plains, I felt the warmth, passion, and unwavering support that make Auburn truly special.”

The Tigers just weren’t ever able to get over the hump during his time as the coach, and they lost a ton of close games. All five of their losses this season were by 10 points or less.

Freeze moved up the coaching ranks because of his offensive prowess, but that is where Auburn struggled the most under Freeze. In all 5 of those SEC losses, they scored 17 points or less.

Freeze ends his time at Auburn as 15-19 overall, and 6-16 in SEC play. He will be owed $15.8 million as part of his buyout, and Auburn now joins Arkansas, Florida and LSU with vacant head coaching positions.

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he is a 3-star recruit. Wolf is currently the No. 3 ranked player in England, and the No. 76 tight end in the class. He is a bit of an unknown, as he is from the NFL Academy in England. He took a visit to Tennessee this weekend, and was offered a scholarship last month by the Volunteers.

The 2026 class is a big one for Tennessee, as he became the 24th player to commit from the class. However, it was an important one as Tennessee didn’t have any current tight ends committed in the class.

The Volunteers will have a bye next before taking on New Mexico State on Nov. 15.

Tennessee and Oklahoma are squaring off on Saturday night in a game that has major implications when it comes to the College Football Playoff. The winner still has a good chance at making the CFP, while the loser will pick up a dreaded third loss.

The Volunteers have out-gained the Sooners 255-99 in total yards through 1 half of play, but Joey Aguilar’s 3 first-half turnovers helped the Sooners take a 16-10 lead to the break.

The fans are frustrated because they feel the team should be leading the game, and they are voicing their frustrations with their quarterback on social media.

He is 16-of-23 for 211 yards and one touchdown, but he has two interceptions and one fumble. The fumble was picked up by Oklahoma defensive end R Mason Thomas, who took it back 71 yards for the Sooners’ first score of the game.

When he limits turnovers, the Volunteers can score with any team in the country. However, with the Sooners’ offense unable to muster up anything on their own, the turnovers are the biggest reason why the score is what it is in Knoxville.

If Aguilar is able to fix the turnovers, Tennessee is more than capable of getting the win. If he doesn’t, then the chances for a return trip to the CFP are all but gone for the Volunteers.

Auburn’s offense has struggled throughout the Hugh Freeze era, and that once again has been the case this season.

The defense has played well enough throughout the year to have more wins, but the offense just can’t get out of its own ways. Whether it is penalties or a lack of third-down conversions, Auburn‘s offense has hurt the team too often.

That once again is the case on Saturday night, as the Tigers are tied with Kentucky at the half with the score being 3-3. Fans are voicing their frustrations with the offensive performance, and they are calling for Freeze to be fired.

Auburn didn’t score until the final seconds of the first half when Alex McPherson kicked a 27-yard field goal to tie the game. The Tigers averaged just 3.3 yards per play before the break.

Here’s the best of the social media reaction from Auburn fans:

The Tigers have been competitive in nearly every game they have played this season. All four of their losses are in SEC play, and have been by a combined 29 points. In those four games, they have scored 17 points or less in every game, and scored 10 in two of them.

Freeze is known as an offensive guy, as that is how he got his breaks in college football. However, things just haven’t been good enough on that side of the football during his entire time at Auburn. Fans have officially lost their patience for him, and with how the SEC has been with coaches recently, it could be a tough night for Freeze if the Tigers don’t get the job done against Kentucky.

He delivered a vicious stiff arm on Tennessee tight end Miles Kitselman en route to the 71-yard touchdown return to tie the game up with the Vols.

However, it wasn’t all good for Thomas, as ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe said that he was being evaluated for a hamstring injury after the play. He entered the game with 5.5 sacks on the season, and is one of the elite pass rushers in all of college football.

The game between Oklahoma and Tennessee is huge when it comes to the College Football Playoff. The winner of this game still has a legitimate chance of making it to the CFP, while the loser is all but eliminated from contention.

For Sooners fans, the focus is on whether or not Thomas is able to come back and not let the injury hamper him. As he has shown early in this game, he is more than capable of producing a game-changing play.

Mississippi State has taken some significant strides this year under Jeff Lebby, but the Bulldogs haven’t been able to finish the job. Last week, they were up 17 on Texas in the fourth quarter, but ended up losing in overtime.

On Saturday though, it was the Bulldogs making the big comeback, as they overcame a a 14-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to pull out the 38-35 victory for their first SEC win of the season.

Not only was it the first SEC win of the season for the Bulldogs, it was the first for Lebby during his time as the Mississippi State coach. He was 0-12 before that.

Quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns, including an 18-yard pass to Anthony Evans III with 48 seconds remaining in the game to get the win. Evans was the go to receiver all night, as he finished with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

With the win, the Bulldogs moved to 5-4 on the year, and are in position to make a bowl game. That would be a major improvement after finishing 2-10 in his first year last season.

The schedule isn’t easy though, as Mississippi State hosts the Georgia Bulldogs next week, with the final two games being at Missouri and against Ole Miss. Regardless, all that matters on Saturday night is the Bulldogs got that elusive victory for Lebby.

Gunner Stockton and the Georgia Bulldogs were up 24-20 late in the game with a third-and-short inside the Florida 10-yard line. Stockton kept the ball in his hands, got the first down and had a chance to score a touchdown.

However, he decided to fall down at the one-yard line, which allowed the Bulldogs to kneel the ball out for the final score being 24-20.

That decision secured Georgia’s victory over the Gators. However, it also had a significant impact on the betting markets. A touchdown would have likely resulted in Georgia covering the spread for this game, which closed at 7 points. The total for this game — 50 points — also hung in the balance based on the outcome of this Georgia drive.

Here’s a clip of Stockton taking a knee at the 1-yard line to keep it a 24-20 game:

For Stockton and the rest of the Bulldogs, all that mattered was the fact that they got the victory. Georgia has struggled in the first half in many games this year, and Saturday was no different. The score was tied at 10 at the half, and the Gators took a 17-10 lead in the third quarter.

However, the Bulldogs made the big play, as Chauncey Bowens scored on a 36-yard run late to give Georgia the win.

At 7-1, the Bulldogs are in great shape to compete for an SEC title, as well as making it to the College Football Playoff. Up next for Georgia is a road trip to Starkville to take on Mississippi State next weekend.

Arch Manning had a big day Saturday, as he delivered one of the best performances in his young career in Texas‘ 34-31 victory at home against Vanderbilt. He finished the day 25-of-33 for 328 yards and three touchdowns.

What made his performance even more impressive is that Manning didn’t practice this week as he was in the concussion protocol. However, he was cleared and able to play.

While talking to reporters after the game, Manning cracked a joke and said the concussion might have “helped” his performance.

“Maybe the concussion helped,” Manning said with a smile. “It starts with the o-line, they played really well today. Receivers made plays and that makes it a little bit easier on me.”

A few weeks ago there were major concerns with how Manning was playing, but he has continued to play better each week. In the last two weeks, he has thrown for 674 yards and 6 touchdowns, while looking much more in command of the offense.

It hasn’t been pretty the past couple of weeks, but the Longhorns are still in control of their own destiny when it comes to making the College Football Playoff. There are still some very difficult games remaining with matchups against Georgia and Texas A&M. However, if the offense can continue to play better to go along with the elite Longhorns defense, then Texas has a chance for a special season.

Arkansas CB Kani Walker put together arguably the best game of his collegiate career in Week 9 when the Razorbacks took on Auburn. He finished the game with a career-high nine tackles, while also getting his first interception of the season.

Not only did he get a pick, but he took it 89 yards the other way for a touchdown, where he showcased elite speed. On the return, he hit a fastest speed of 21.4 MPH, which was the second fastest of any player in Week 9.

Walker started his college career at Louisville, but he spent only one season there before transferring to Oklahoma. During his three years in Norman, he had 52 tackles and two interceptions.

However, he is putting together by far the best season of his career, as he had 35 tackles and that interception so far at Arkansas.

He will look to showcase that speed next week when the Razorbacks travel to Starkville to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, and the game will be on the SEC Network.

Joel Klatt reveals his pick to replace Brian Kelly at LSU https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/joel-klatt-reveals-his-pick-to-replace-brian-kelly-at-lsu/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 19:37:51 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=520100 Joel Klatt thinks when it is all said and done, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin will be the next coach of the LSU Tigers.

Joel Klatt knows LSU is going to be a highly sought-after job, and he believes it is one of the best jobs in the entire sport. Frank Wilson is currently the interim coach for the team moving forward after Brian Kelly‘s dismissal, but the team expects to make a big splash in the off-season.

During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Klatt said he believes that Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin will be in Baton Rouge next season.

“LSU is intriguing,” Klatt said. “LSU is a step above. I think you have to overachieve at Ole Miss. You have to do things that the program has never done to reach your ultimate goals and win at the top end of college football. We know that LSU can and put together rosters year in and year that can compete at the top end of not only the SEC, but the country and win a national championship. I think LSU has top-two or three resources financially in college football. If I had to bet, Lane Kiffin is your next coach at LSU.”

Klatt has gone on the record saying that LSU should call Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and Dan Lanning as well to come be the head coach, but he thinks Lanning stays at Oregon. The conversation around Kiffin leaving Ole Miss is going to continue throughout the rest of the season, as Florida also figures to be very interested in bringing in the Rebels coach.

Right now, the main focus for Kiffin is getting his Rebels ready for South Carolina and continuing their track to the College Football Playoff. The Rebels don’t have a current Top 25 team remaining on their schedule, and have as good of chance as nearly any team in the country to make the CFP.

Mike Elko says bye week goal is to get healthy for ‘stretch run’ https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/mike-elko-says-bye-week-goal-is-to-get-healthy-for-stretch-run/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 19:09:19 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=520064 Texas A&M is on a bye in Week 10, and Mike Elko's main focus for his team during this week is to get healthy for November.

Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies are coming off a dominating 49-25 victory on the road at LSU in Week 9, and their reward is a bye in Week 10.

The Aggies are undefeated at 8-0, and are currently the No. 3 team in the country. The team is set up as well as any team in the SEC to make a run at the conference championship, as well as the College Football Playoff.

The bye couldn’t come at a better time for the Aggies, and Elko said the team’s focus now is getting healthy for the upcoming stretch run.

“Health is much more at a premium right now. The first bye week came so early in the year,” Elko said. “There were still a lot of things we were trying to develop and clean up.” “This week, coming off of five straight SEC games, the premium is staying sharp, staying crisp and staying at our level, but maybe some of that is pulling back the physicality just a little bit to get our guys healthy for the stretch run.”

The Aggies’ first bye of the season came on Sept. 20, which was after the Week 3 victory against Notre Dame. That was before the start of a grueling SEC schedule, so the team was in need of one.

Running back Rueben Owens and offensive lineman Chase Bisontis are two guys who could especially use byes, as they are banged up a little. Elko was asked about both of those guys, and he gave positive updates.

“We’re going to be fine,” Elko said about Owens.

He followed that with another assuring answer on Bisontis, saying ‘he’s great.

The Aggies will be back in action on Nov. 8 when they travel to Columbia to take on Mizzou.
